Doba gives words of wisdom at Moose Krause Scholar-Athlete Dinner
Fifteen of the area's best football scholar-athletes were honored at the 35th Annual Moose Krause Dinner. Former Mishawaka and Washington State head coach Bill Doba was the keynote speaker.

Fifteen exceptional area high school football scholar-athletes were recognized Wednesday night at the 35th Moose Krause Dinner for their accomplishments on and off the gridiron.

Former Mishawaka and Washington State head coach Bill Doba was the keynote speaker.

Doba said he was very excited to be living back in the area and to be able to talk to the scholar athletes about life after high school.

Notre Dame QB coach Ron Powlus also served as a guest speaker.

Listed below are the 15 scholar-athletes along with some of their achievements on and off the field:

Adam Arsenault
St. Joseph's

Adam was captain of 2008 Indians football team and a key member of the 2007 squad that reached the 3A State Championship Game. Arsenhault is ranked 14th in St. Joe's senior class and is undecided on college.


Mike Carroll
Penn

Carroll is a 2-sport star at Penn. He was linebacker and captain for the football team and arguably the biggest reason the Kingsmen reached Semi-State this season. His top sport is baseball, where he will play at the Division I level next year at Duke. In the classroom, Mike is one of Penn's best, with a 3.96 GPA that rakns him 28th in a class of 707. He plans to major in economics at Duke.


John Fagan
South Central

John is the first Moose Krause Scholar Athlete from South Central. Makes sense considering he is the school's valedictorian! He had 448 catches and four touchdowns during his senior season of football.


Craig Fitzgerald
John Glenn

Craig is a 3-sport athlete at Glenn where he stars in football, wrestling and track and field. He also plays the tuba in the band ranks 11th in his senior class.


Thomas Gingrich
Goshen

Thomas was a 3-year offensive lineman for the Redskins. Off the field, he is ranked 32nd in Goshen's senior class of 386 and is active volunteer at Parkside School, VFW Post and the Salvation Army.


Kyle Hoff
Mishawaka

What position didn't Kyle play in high school. In his four years, he was a wide receiver, tight end, quarterback and linebacker for the Cavemen. He's also ranked 16th in a class of 425. In the community, he's a food drive participant, a blood donor and a donation collection worker. He will attend IU in the fall.


Brett Hunter
Goshen

A second winner from Goshen, Brett plays both football and baseball for the Redskins. He ranked 20th in his senior class and plans to attend either IU or Butler.


Aaron Miers
Elkhart Central

Aaron was a 3-year offensive lineman for the Blazers. He is ranked 41st of a class of 385. He's very gifted in engineering where he won the Bill Swihart grant in robotics. He's hoping to major in aeronautical engineering at Purdue.


Paul Ogren
Marian

Paul was a 2-way starter at Marian as a running back and cornerback. He also played basketball and and is a member of the track team. He volunteers at the Homeless Center, St. Joseph Parish and is a tutor. He will attend Dayton in the fall.


Jeremy Renz
Plymouth

Jeremy Renz was a 3-year starting linebacker at Plymouth, also playing basketball and baseball. In the classroom, he's ranked 10th in the Pilgrims class of 221. He is headed to IU to major in biochemistry.


Erich Sale
Warsaw Community

Erich was Warsaw's leading tackler in football this season. This spring, he's a 2-sport star, playing baseball and track. He's also ranked 15th in the Tigers' senior class of 455. In the community, he worked with the Festival of the Trees, the ALS walk, and is an altar boy at Sacred Heart Church.


Skyler Titus
Northwood

As a freshman, Skyler Titus led NorthWood to a 3A State Championship. He continued to shine as one of the area's best quarterbacks over the next four years and will be a preferred walk-on QB at Purdue next season. Skyler ranks 24th in NorthWood's senior class and volunteers for Toys for Tots, the 4-H fair, and at Nappanee First Church of God.


Brandon Williams
Northwood

Brandon Williams is the 2nd scholar-athlete from NorthWood. Williams excelled as a punter, kicker and wide receiver for the Panthers. He's ranked 2nd in NorthWood's senior class.


Ben Zelmer
Penn

Ben was a key member of Penn's football team as a linebacker and also participated in rugby. But his real accomplishments come in class. Zelmer is ranked 2nd of 707 students in Penn's senior class boasting an unbelievable 2250 SAT. He also plays the trombone in the band and volunteers at the Homeless Center, the Osceola Blue Grass Festival and Christ the King Lutheran Church. He is headed to Notre Dame.


Eric Zeltwanger
Bremen

Eric was captain of Bremen's football team, starting for two years at cornerback. In the classroom, no one at Bremen was better. Eric is the school's valedictorian. He volunteers at the Hope Rescue Mission, at Project Help, and was an Adopt-a-Friend reader to a Down Syndrome child.
