The lights went out Saturday night both in Michiana and around the world.

At least for an hour.

That's because at 8:30 p.m. EST the clock struck Earth Hour, and millions of people around the world -- from Vegas to the Eifel Tower -- shut off their lights.

It's an hour to show that people are ready to make a difference when it comes to energy usage.

Some local restaurants observed the hour as well.

Uptown Kitchen in Granger shut off their lights and had a candle-lit dinner.

Villa Macri in Granger's Toscana Park used their "dark sky-friendly" lights, which it has had since it opened.

"I think it's great," said Jerry Macri, owner of Villa Macri. "It lets us stop and think how much energy we're wasting, and an hour across the world, how much that can save."

Students in the PHM school district have spent the last couple of weeks watching the night skies, recording where the darkest spots are and where there is the most light pollution.
