A biracial couple says their children are being harassed by other kids because of the color of their skin. From physical bullying to name-calling, the Hill family of Bremen says they've had enough.

Newscenter 16 sat down with the Hill family. They say their kids started getting harassed by other children shortly after they moved to Bremen, about two years ago.

Justin and Stephanie Hill say things escalated in recent weeks-- so much so-- they decided to homeschool their kids.

Meantime, Bremen's Elementary-Middle School Principal, Larry Yelaska, says they take harassment very seriously and follow procedure for discipline on every case.

The Hill family says they moved to Bremen for a fresh start. They say Elkhart was changing and heard Bremen was a good place to raise kids.

“We live right by school, our kids can walk to school, by church, it was great, great in the beginning,” says Justin Hill.

But a short time after their move, the Hill's say their 6th grade daughter, Shyasia, and 3rd grade son, Shiquan, started getting picked on by other kids. The couple says it's been both verbal and physical abuse.

“We had one boy put a fork up to my daughter's neck while another boy held her, and two other boys beat up my son-- reported that to school and there was absolutely nothing done-- said they talked to boys, but never did anything,” adds Hill.

“It doesn't feel so good, makes me feel like I just don't want to be here,” says Shiquan White.

“I've been called cuss words, I've been hit, I've gotten things put up to my neck,” adds Shyasia Cook. “When I get home, I feel upset, feel mad.”

The family says they pulled their kids out of school about three weeks ago, after Shyasia got into a fight and was suspended from school. Shyasia was suspended for two days, while the other girl had a one day in-school suspension.

“Why wasn't their punishment the same?” asks the kid’s mother, Stephanie Hill, “Shoulda been the same.”

“She [Shyasia] finally just had enough over three years. My kids are great, straight A's, student council, never had a problem,” adds Justin.

Newscenter 16 spoke with Bremen's Elementary-Middle School Principal. He says they have policies for discipline in place and always follow them. The Principal says they take harassment very seriously and no situation has gone unattended.

Nevertheless, the Hill's still have a different view of what's happened to their kids.

“I woulda never dreamed that something like this can still happen,” says Stephanie Hill.

“It hurts, hurts a lot, but I'm staying strong with my family, being home-schooled, it's a lot easier,” adds Shyasia.

“I'm tired of it, it's 2009, especially with kids, people need to get educated for awareness and things of that nature,” explains Justin Hill.

Again, Bremen School officials maintain they don't tolerate bad behavior and they always deal with situations that arise. They believe they've handled all situations properly.

The Hill family says they’ll continue to home school until they can save enough to move to another school district. They're thinking about moving to the Dowagiac area, where they think it's more diverse and the kids might be more accepted.
