Police in LaPorte County say slick roads were to blame in a car versus train accident that killed one person Saturday night.

County Coroner John Sullivan says 16-year-old Jimmy Ashcraft died from massive internal bleeding. He was a student at New Prairie High School. Twenty-year-old Alysia Kominowski was in critical condition Monday evening.

The accident happened at a railroad crossing on the St. Joseph County Line in New Carlisle.

Police say a car driven by Cole Badzinski began to slide off the road as it approached the South Shore tracks around 6:00 p.m., and collided with a westbound train. He was treated at Memorial Hospital in South Bend and is now home.

"It's not his fault. It was the weather," says Mike Ingole, who pulled up to the scene right after the accident.

"The first thing I thought was, 'I needed to get out and help them.' But after I saw the extent of the damage to the vehicle and the people I knew there was nothing I could do for them."

Friends remember Ashcraft as a kind boy with a great sense of humor.

"Just a great personality. Just a great kid. Just somebody that everybody really enjoyed being around," shares Rhonda Smoroski, a health aid at New Prairie Middle School. "You cry with the kids. You feel for them and you feel their sadness. It's just really hard on them."

"He was a really cool guy to hang out with. We used to hang out all the time," says Marcos Elizalde, Jimmy's good friend. "The last time I saw him was New Years and I called him and I guess the accident happened a half hour after."

"They need to remember the good things about their friend and right those things down and focus on that because those are the things they want to remember," says Clara Clark, New Prairie High School Principal.

Friends and family will gather for a memorial Tuesday, February 24th at 3:00 p.m. at American Legion Post #204, 204 Linden Street Three Oaks, MI.

The driver of the car is not facing any charges. In all fatal crashes, blood and alcohol tests are conducted. Since Badzinski was recently released from the hospital, police haven't gotten those results yet. Also, police are not sure if they were wearing seat belts. The driver and the teen who died were ejected from the SUV. The other passenger was trapped inside.

No passengers on the train were hurt, but South Shore spokesman John Parsons says service on the South Shore between Michigan City and South Bend was suspended for a short time Saturday night.

Parsons says the train was traveling between 50 and 60 miles an hour at the spot where the accident took place.

The crossing only had blinking lights, but Parsons says they were operating properly at the time of the accident.

"It's extremely important, especially if there's slick roads, to be extra cautious around railroad crossings giving yourself plenty of time to stop," says Parsons. "It was terrible that someone lost their life here today, that's tragic."
