Crowds lineup to see President Obama in Elkhart
A long line of people gathered outside Elkhart's Concord High School, all hoping to be just a little part of a historic day. President Obama held a town hall meeting at the high school on Monday. Elkhart County's unemployment rate is among the worst in the nation.

While many folks were able to get their hands on tickets, not everyone was able to get inside-- but that didn't stop people from getting in on the action.
Dozens of very excited people gathered outside the high school, hoping to be just a little part of a historic day. Even though they didn't have tickets for the event, people still wanted to be a part of the activity.
While many people say they support the President's stimulus plan, others say they're worried it has too much wasteful spending. But regardless of political views, it's not everyday that the President comes to town.
It's “déjà vu” outside Concord High School. Just six months ago, the same lines formed outside McCuen Gym, for then candidate Obama. Now many are back again, this time, looking for economic stimulus from now President Obama.
“And I got laid off this past week,” says Sam Hicks of Elkhart.
In the last year, Sam Hicks has lost two jobs in the local RV industry.
“I think it's good that he comes to where it's hardest hit,” adds Hicks.
“It’s seems like everywhere we go, [they say] we're not hiring, we're turned away,” says another woman from Elkhart.
“I think we have got to get people back to work. My friends and neighbors are losing their jobs and homes. What better way to get the economy moving then to create jobs here-- and fix our roads and schools,” says Robin Forsythe, a union plumber who supports the economic stimulus plan.
Many people say they're pleased with the town hall format, a chance to ask the President their own questions on his economic plans.
“We'd like to know where the jobs are going with this economic stimulus program-- and how that works in relation to job creation,” says Ron Douglas, another Elkhart resident who is concerned about the state of the economy.
“I grew up in Elkhart, I'm excited he's coming to this area. My husband is a small business owner, so I'm anxious to hear what he has to say and how he can help us all out,” says Susan Adkins of Osceola.
A number of protesters also gathered outside Concord High-- some displaying pigs-- speaking out against pork barrel spending.
“The point I want to make is that Congress is spending us into penury. Our children, our grandchildren are going to be paying a trillion dollars, the people who are working are going to be paying for that,” says Myer Blatt, who held signs outside the event, protesting what he calls irresponsible spending.
Meantime, all opinions aside, every American is looking for solutions to the problems-- solutions that can't come soon enough.
“Anything is possible, we just gotta see what happens and hope for the best, for all people, you know,” says Michael Maxie.
Again, this was President Obama's second trip to Concord High School and his fifth trip to Michiana in the last year. He campaigned here last April, May and August.
The President had an unemployed RV worker introduce him at the town hall event. President Obama says Elkhart's workers are among the hardest working in our country. He said they're people who aren't looking for handouts, but for work and a chance to support their families.
