As prices for scrap metals have dropped in the past few months, so too has theft. Still, it’s a crime that has plagued the area for years—and will likely return when prices for metals rise. Michigan’s new law aims to crack down on those who hope to make a profit from stolen metals.
Here are the new guidelines:
--Anybody who wants to sell scrap metal must show a driver’s license or state ID
--provide a thumbprint
--Sign to prove ownership or permission to sell the metal
--And sign they’ve never been convicted of metal theft.
The Michigan laws take effect on April 1.
