In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, it is tradition to receive presents -- not from Santa, but rather from the Three Wise Men.

Children from the La Casa de Amistad community center gathered Monday evening to learn more about this unique custom.

The South Bend Police Department hosted the event and raised money for gifts and snacks.

They say it's important for the kids to explore their heritage.

"This is one tradition that is just such a beautiful tradition that I wanted to do something to help keep that alive," explained Sgt. Christopher Voros. "That's what we're doing here. We're trying to go and do something for the children."

According to tradition, the wise trio will leave gifts on the night of January 5th for children to discover the next morning.
