We now know the names of two people killed Wednesday in a crash on Cleveland Road.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. near the intersection of Cleveland and Nadine street.

Police say 46-year old Edward Jones lost control of his Lincoln and crossed the centerline into the path of the SUV.

Jones died at the scene. His passenger, 86-year-old Millia Ross, later died at the hospital.

Both were from Dowagiac.

Two people in the SUV were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say weather is to blame for the crash. Slick roads caused a number of accidents throughout the day on Wednesday.

A portion of Cleveland Road was closed part of the day due to this accident.

At the time of the accident the roadway was snow-covered and icy.

Anonymous: You dont just lose control when you are driving if you are going a safe speed. If you do, then you are a horrible driver and dont belong on the road, in any weather condition. The man was obviously going too fast for the type of weather that was happening that he was driving in thus, he was speeding. "Weather is to blame" is a total joke of an excuse as to what caused the wreck. Yeah, "weather" just jumped out and got him! It was human error on the drivers part for not driving safely during a freaking snow storm.

Sorry, citizens of South Bend. Our street crews can't de-salt the roads because we sold all of the salt to raise money to pay for other basic city services. Next time, vote Manigualt. Signed, Steve.

Lets look at the fine points of this wreck: 1 - It was snowing/had snowed. 2 - the road was obviously slick. 3 - the driver was speeding. 4 - speeding as he came upon a hill. 5 - he slammed on the brakes at a stop sign......wow, with all of that you'd think people wouldnt be so surprised he lost it and totally ate it. I'd say he's just lucky no one but he and his passenger were hurt in this wreck, the moron. Slow down when its slick out! What the hell is the matter with people?!

Sand on a road can make it slippery too. Try dumping some out on a curve on a clean dry road and see what happens... Driver error is the blame. People too cheap to take the toll road are crowding cleveland rd....

Slow down.

To all the people complaining about Cleveland Rd. Take another route. If you feel that it is that dangerous then stop driving down that stretch of road. Yes it may be an inconvenience, but so is having an accident. Duh

If you can, TAKE THE BUS TO WORK...why more people dont, is out of pure I WOULDNT BE CAUGHT DEAD ON A BUS, OR ITS FOR POOR PEOPLE...YEAH WHATEVER...I am by no means poor, and 99% of people on the bus, are either going to school or work....now there are exceptions if you live in an area that doesn't have bus services. I only drive when I have meetings...Paying for parking is a joke, risking my life is by no means a laughing matter. Not when the roads dont get done in a timely fashion. Let the others drive, slide, go up on lawns...and in the worse cases loose their life. And be a nervous wreck by the time you get to work. Think about it. And you will be ECO Friendly as my kids say.

If you can't drive on solid ice proficiently then stay home.

Can the relatives of these poor dead people sue the St. Joseph County Roads Dept. This is an OUTRAGE!!! Where are the salt and sand trucks on these ice rinks they call roads. Truck sand in from Lake Michigan, do something so that more people don't die!!!!

You know, as I look out my windown now in downtown south bend, I dread going to work. The city of South Bend should be held accountable for the roads. And to the person who said Mishawaka can have clear roads, down to hte pavement...try driving Edison everyday. It's south bend into mishawaka...they don't plow it. Ever. And that is a BUSY road.

It is a sad story that someone has lost their life, but they are called accidents for a reason. Many factors to what caused the accident may not be obvious. Think of how many other cars drove that stretch of road that morning and didn't have an accident. I think too many people are quick to blame someone else for a mistake that may or may not have been avoidable. The plow trucks have a lot of area to cover and can't sit on one stretch of road all day long. I give them a lot of credit for driving those trucks out there with half the idiots driving out there. We complain when the roads are not clean enough and we complain when the plows are in our way. Stop pointing fingers all of the time and be responsible for your own actions. If you can't do that then ride the bus so you can pawn the blame on the bus driver. Very unfortunate for the loss of lives, I send my sympathy for the family

Police always patrol ths area. One of the main roads I choose to not speed at all on. Regardless police can not prevent accidents or weather conditions. Let's be realistic... sadly they are only human.

Posted by: Margaret Location: South Bend on Dec 18, 2008 at 02:59 PM
Why is it that Mishawaka can have roads that are cleaned off and dry down to the pavement when in SB, the roads are snow and ice covered and slick as snot. Maybe our guys need ot take a refresher course in snow plowing and salt application 101.

I think that we need to spend more money on parking garages at Notre Dame and buying buildings to tear down for parking by the cove and last but not least a jumbo tron in down town. The govt. bodies in the city and the county are both crying no money but keep on wasting it and it won't hit them that the roads need to be salted and plowed until one of their own is killed due to their neglect. How many peaple have to die to get the roads taken care of? Don't ask our Mayor.

Do the police ever patrol this road? I have never seen anyone pulled over, but I constantly see drivers going 70 and above - perhaps if the police pulled people over, it would make others slow down!

Cleveland Road has been horrible to drive on starting with the first snow fall. What's wrong with our snow plow and salt and sanding program? Juniper and Cleveland is always a sheet of Ice. Too many people running red lights because they slide thru on the icy roads. The road could be alot better. There is no reason for people to die at 11:00 a.m on icy roads. Save lives, Use the salt and sand and make the roads safe. Please.

Recently in the South Bend Tribune there have been 3 deaths due to icy road conditions in the Michiana area. One of the deaths occurred on the Bypass and the other (2) deaths were on Cleveland road. The officers at the scene of the Cleveland road accident said the road was so slippery that he could barely stand and several individuals at the accident scene had slipped and fallen on the icy road. Yet we have been told that the street crews have been salting the streets as usual. I live close to an elementary school (Hamilton) at the intersection of York and Jackson. I don’t believe that I have seen had salt spread this entire winter season on this intersection. Cars frequently slid through the intersection and are not able to stop. As a concerned South Bend resident, how many more people have to either get injured or die because of a shortage of salt?

Something that has always bothered me, the people of Indiana, especially St Joe County, are taxed very heavily. State income tax, County income tax, property tax, excise tax, wheel tax, etc... With all the income generated by taxes in Indiana and St Joe County, why does it appear that none of that money is used to maintain the roads? There always seems to be "new construction" all over the place, but never just "maintenance". I can close my eyes (while a passenger) on 933 and tell exactly when we cross the State Line due to the poor quality of the road way on the Indiana side. Further, why do people assume that because they are driving slow they are being safe? If the car coming up behind you is doing the speed limit and you are 15 mph under it, who is the safe one? Contrary to the commercials and news paper ads that read "SPEED KILLS", they are wrong! Speed doesn't kill. Differences in speed kills. My prayers go out to the families of these tragic accident victims.

One of the many reasons I moved to Phoenix... (Although we have more than our share of stupid drivers here as well -- maybe South Bend needs to get the speed enforcement cameras that we have started using out here; the only people who hate them are the fools who get caught on them!)

Margaret 0839Hrs. The police write tons of tickets in that school zone. The police were not there writing tickets then because they were busy with idiots driving like idiots who were crashing !!!

I have to agree. EVERY winter Cleveland Road is snow covered and slick. I do however want to AGAIN compliment the fact that the jogging path on Riverside was plowed and salted, THANK YOU SOUTH BEND

Posted by: Me on Dec 18, 2008 at 02:02 AM
Common sense people, when the roads are bad.....SLOW DOWN!!!!! and as far as the plowing goes, you will usally see them when the snow & ice are just about melted and gone in this county!

Yesterday-Tuesday-when I was coming home from work, I was heading towards Meijer on Cleveland to get gas and some jack ass came up so fast in the left lane and started riding on some poor guys bumper. It is these kinds of FOOLS that think that they are invincible, and can handle any kind of weather in their piece of crap car that cause accidents. By the way, for a change that was the only fool that I saw driving fast yesterday. Today, in front of Clay Intermediate, some jerk in a truck was driving too fast in the school zone and kept moving from lane to lane. Where are the police? Oh they are scoping out some poor guy selling turtles. Gee he is a threat.

I was also in a accident on Cleveland Road this morning and have to say to Jayne I am not a "crazy ass". I was driving much slower than the other cars, but the ice had a different route in mind. You shouldn't be so quick to judge, that's why it's called an accident.

Posted by: Michael Location: Granger on Dec 17, 2008 at 07:30 PM
Clevland passes from county to Mishawaka to county then South Bend and back to county. Not a one of the street departments has plowed, salted or sanded even half as well as years past. I travel Cleveland to and from work--Granger to just past Bendix Drive--and drive cautiously but this road is slick morning or night. Last year I slid through the Hickory intersection on a red light because the layer of ice would not allow me to stop. Today at 7:30 am the only clear pavement on Cleveland was a patch in each lane where the heat of the tires must have melted the snow and ice. The rest of the road was unbelievably slick. God forbid if the person in front of you brakes!

Cleveland Road is a nightmare ALWAYS. It's incredibly dangerous from Portage to S.R. 933 and bad near Ironwood. DO THEY EVER PLOW OR SALT THAT ROAD??? Judging by the number of accidents I guess not.

Posted by: Jayne Location: middlebury on Dec 17, 2008 at 06:54 PM
very very sad ~ unfortunately this is what it takes to make crazy asses to slow down ~ NOBODY is resillient to slick roads regardless of what you drive. what a tragedy right before Christmas...

Posted by: angry Location: south bend on Dec 17, 2008 at 05:20 PM
This is total bull this road way should not have been snow covered and slick at this time of the day. what are you drivers doing not your job its very clear. you people travel cleveland road all day long are you all asleep or what.

Posted by: Homer Location: plymouth on Dec 17, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Who is supposed to take care of Cleveland road when it snows ? It never gets plowed at all after it snows, then the traffic packs the snow down until it turns to ice. I have worked in this area of west of Cleveland and Portage over 7 years and every winter it's the same old story. I only hope when someone gets killed out here that the relatives sue both the city and the county for negligence, the backroads of Marshall county where I live get plowed more often then Cleveland Road !

Another reason why I HATE winter! Too many serious accidents on the roads!
