Thursday community members came together to remember a long-time Michiana law enforcement officer killed in a hit and run on last month.

Roseland town marshal Craig Toner died November 1st, when a drunk driver struck him on his motorcycle.

Since then, the ecumenical prayer group has met every Thursday at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in South Bend for a prayer vigil for Toner.

Thursday was their final meeting.

Amid prayers, singing, and hugging, Toner's parents and many who knew him said goodbye to a man who they say died much too soon.

"Although it was not a line of duty death for officer toner it still impacts us because those are the ones that stand on the thin blue line and protect everybody and serve everybody in the community," said Pastor Bill Wassner.

Fifteen people were present at the vigil.

The church is located on the corner of Ironwood and Corby, near the spot where Toner died.

I have to agree with Dan here. I knew Craig "back in the day".... And he was no angel, that's for sure.

Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Im not saying that justifies what happened but he could have very easily killed someone when he was arrested for dwi-multiple times. Accidents happen. Instead of blaming another person maybe consider that god needed him for some reason. A higher power has control when it comes to things like this.

Dan, what an inappropriate comment. Craig was a wonderful person and certainly didn't deserve such a terrible ending to his life.

I know, Anonymous @ 9:49. It pisses me off, too. Let's just wait and see what happens. They have to know that if there is a lientent sentence, or a plea bargain, there will be nothing short of a riot. The sad part of this is, Orta is a hero in jail, because he killed a Police Officer. In Marshall County, our judges are elected. In St. Joe, they are appointed, so, I am waiting. They have to do something to this "hispanic", that is "legal", and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And anyway, Orta's friends and family say the Marshal should have gotten out of Orta's way. I will NEVER forget that post. I wish I had had the honor of knowing the Marshal.

I think its important to remember Toner was convicted twice of driving while intoxicated himself.

Still nothing from the local media on what liberal judges let this Orta murder out of jail 19 times.

My thoughts exactly, julie, I would have been there, too, but perhaps the family only wanted themselves and his friends. Either way, I think of the Marshal every single day and am anxiously awaiting the court hearing on March 23. I will be paying VERY close attention to this.
