Police in LaPorte County say they know who is responsible for shooting and killing a popular Belgian draft horse.

The horse was shot and died last month in a pasture on South 650 West.

Police have arrested two people, but will not release more details until Friday.

The owners say the animal was loved by thousands of people in the community.

The horse was part of a team of draft horses that pulled wagons at Garwood Orchards.

Wow we have now 2 very disturbed individuals. "John and Who Give A" need serious counseling!!! Why dont you get over it JOHN!! You are just as sick as the other one. Where is the compassion anymore?? It was horse and a family member as well. You must not have any family or pets to leave a comment like that on here. You really think the legislation will pass that hunters kill horses...LOL You are a true joke to society. People should KEEP horses because they do alot of good for families. As you can see this horse helped alot of disabled people so this was more than a horse. Would you shoot this horse if you had a family member disabled and this precious horse helped that family member?? You 2 are just sick, demented people who need serious help. RIP sweet Ben...You were truely loved and will be missed forever....

It was just a horse. GET OVER IT! I am in favor of the hunters. People shouldnt keep horses anyway. They are wild animals that should be roaming free so we can hunt them. I think they did the community a favor. I am with you TO E... I think legislation should be passed to allow us to hunt horse. There is a lot of good meat on horses and I myself like the flavor of the meat.

Posted by: TO E Location: Who Gives A... on Dec 5, 2008 at 10:13 AM: It is very sad about this horse. This animal should not have to suffer. He was defensless. Since we are on the subject of horses "location who gives a" you shouldn't want horses killed since you are in the back end of their breed...A horses ass!!!!!!

Although I do think "E" is a moron, I agree with the sentiment. I wish people would get as upset about abortion murdering a defenseless baby as they do about a horse. That being said, the folks who shot this horse are truly deviant and need to be punished, plus make restitution.

As a horse owner and animal lover, the best thing that could happen is to have the persons responsible for this to be shot, but not between the eyes. Shot someplace so they can lay and die slowly in pain alone out in a field. Then they can rot in hell. We don't need people like that living and walking free in our community. They would not want me to be on their jury.

This beautiful creature was shot between the eyes. The one's who did this need to be shot between the eyes. Pay now, or pay later when you stand before God on judgement day. You'll be punished somehow. You don't deserve to walk around in society.

To Who gives a A... You must think that animals don't feel pain of any kind. Or maybe as long as you don't have a bullet lodged in your skull causing excruciating pain while you writh in an unending agonizing death...I hope you don't have any pets....you'd probably shoot it in the head just to watch it die you sick son of a b***h.

TO E You are so wrong about your comments. Correct the horse was just an animal, but it was an animal that someone had to pay a lot of hard eaned money for and I am sure that they also put a lot of love and time into taking care of it. The people that shot it for no reason should be punished. It would be like someone breaking into your home and taking all that you have or just destroying it. Would you not want them punished for what the did? Killing an animal for food is fine but shooting it just for the fun of it is poaching and that is very much against the law.

Willie is on the very right track here. In the days gone by if you stole a horse, you were hung. Period. Horses were very much valued and respected and thieves and low lifes were not. "TO E",at 10:13 you can tell what an obnoxious idiot you are. People who mistreat and abuse animals are almost always people who mistreat and abuse humans as well its been a proven fact time and time again. No one is saying that the horses are cared for more than humans just because people are sticking up for the fact that to kill one is wrong. I don't think your prayer about more horses getting shot will fall on the ears of God who probably started ignoring your lame and obnoxiously ignorant requests long ago. You say to focus on the thousands of people dying instead...chances are they were hurt and killed by someone who started off their career by hurting defenseless animals. Get a clue.

Hey Who Gives A @10:13a.m ....you are one pathetic human being. You need some serious counseling!!!! For you to pray for more horses to be killed so you may keep laughing is just SICK in the HEAD!!! What if this was your pet...but then again as sick as you are in the head you would not be honored to have a pet!! You have no compassion at all and shame on you!! What the heck does abortion have to do with a horse being shot?? How can you even compare the 2?? My answer is its coming from a idiot like yourself so keep your comments to yourself because you are making yourself look like a real LOSER!! How can you really live with yourself on a daily basis?? God bless this family and their precious loss.

E, you horrible person! You must be in on the shooting of the horse if you find it so darn funny. I hope someone takes you out just like they did to the horse.

Posted by: Charlene Location: Grovertown on Dec 5, 2008 at 12:21 PM
These people are sick.. the only acceptable punishment would be to do to them what they did to that poor horse.. if someone did that to my horse i would be in jail because i would find them and they would pay! my heart goes out to the family with the belgian.. i'm very sorry for your loss:-(

Posted by: rob Location: bridgman, mi on Dec 5, 2008 at 11:48 AM
i just don't understand how something so sick like this could happen.. is this the direction our society is heading.. what chance did this poor animal have,, what did it do to desire this.. these individuals need to be punished to the max

Posted by: TO E Location: Who Gives A... on Dec 5, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Ok, first off E, its true, Treat others as you would be treated..sadly a Horse under that sayings isnt considered an OTHER, and you mentioned Inhumane, no no, all they did was kill an animal, i found this entire story hillarious from the beginning, and to tell everyone the truth, im still laughing about it. Seriously, it was a horse, this is just more showing of people care for animals over humans. Can we drop the horse story and maybe focus on the thousands of people dying? getting shot? Abortion?? I can almost garuntee one of you here supports abortion, and let me as you this, Its alright to tear a baby to shreds in its most defensless form, but i cant go, jump a gate, and shoot a useless horse in the face. Ignorance is what this is, Wanna charge em, give them a hunting ticket for "Hunting out of season" than let the guys go home. Since ive heard this pathetic story everytime i see a horse i laugh. I pray more horses get killed soon, keep me laughing

Two sociopaths in the making. Get them out of the gene pool as soon as possible.

As a horse owner and rescuer of animals sometimes we go a little overboard about our animals. An animal as majestic as this Belgian probably was like family to these folks. Anger is justified when selfless ignorance is allowed to stand. These two need to be dealt with severely.

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Dec 5, 2008 at 09:20 AM
Horses aren't cheap; these two should have to pay twice current market value, plus all accrued feed & vet costs for the life of the animal, plus punitive damages, plus some jail time. They are lucky to be alive today; in the old west the punishment for horse theft was death at the end of a rope.

Posted by: Robert Location: Mishawaka on Dec 5, 2008 at 09:09 AM
These two losers should get the death penalty for what they did! It's a given that they will be losers for life. Give them both a bullet in the knee cap and let them bleed to death!

Posted by: BTH Location: SBN on Dec 5, 2008 at 07:45 AM
These two must be some sick scumbags. To kill an innocent animal? Why? What happened to you two freaks? I hope a judge can come up with a fitting penalty for both of them.

Posted by: E Location: SJ on Dec 5, 2008 at 07:37 AM
I say treat them just like they treated the horse, they always say treat others the way you would like to be treated. guess these inhumane people want to be shot in the face.

Posted by: lori Location: new carlisle on Dec 4, 2008 at 09:57 PM
So, who are the idiots? It says two arrested. I think the public should know who would do such a thing. The police need to make sure such things don't happen again. Make people understand that such behavior is unexceptable.

Posted by: Cassi Location: south bend on Dec 4, 2008 at 08:30 PM
I hope the police are correct and they have the right people responsible. An appropriate punishment would be for them to have to care for horses as part of their punishment. these 2 must be cold morons.

Posted by: RON QUANDT Location: SOUTH BEND on Dec 4, 2008 at 05:56 PM
Nice to hear that the police have solved the crime of people mercilessly shooting an innocent animal. Let us hope that the law shows them the same mercy that they showed for this harmless animal.
