Another year has brought another disturbing milestone for home foreclosures in St. Joseph County.

2008 marks the second consecutive year that foreclosures topped 2,000 properties.

It's the fourth year in a row that a record high was set.

The 2008 statistics show that the local foreclosure crisis is still getting worse, instead of better.

You could say that lots and lots of foreclosed properties were sold this year by the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department. "I've even sold a couple of complete subdivisions this year," said Lt. Andy Pletcher of the St. Joseph County P.D. civil division. "There's several homes in the development, but they just, we just sold the lots."

36-lots in the Royal Oak Estates subdivision went on the auction block in October.

In all, 2008 was another record setting year with 2,155 foreclosed properties set for sale by the department. While that's only a slight increase over last year, it marks the second straight year that foreclosures topped 2,000. That's double the trouble the department handled back in 2002--the first year foreclosures topped 1,000.

While a total of 55-homes were scheduled to be sold at today's foreclosure auction, the majority were removed from the list before the bidding started.

"I think its encouraging," said Pletcher, "we had 55 on the sale today, 30-cancelled so we actually auctioned off 25." Pletcher said that at the beginning of the year only five or ten homes were routinely taken off the list.

There are numerous reasons why a foreclosed home would be removed from a scheduled auction.

For instance, a homeowner can stop proceedings by filing bankruptcy. That was the case for at least one of the homes removed from the list today.

It would also indicate a new willingness on the part of banks to work with delinquent customers. While some banks have recently pledged to do that, News Center 16 was unable to confirm that any of today's cancellations were related to such a willingness.

Hey Union guy, I never said anything about pro's and cons of a union. I just said to keep jobs in America. Where did I say anything positive about Walmart. Read it again closely, I think you have emotion and anger when anyone says anything about unions. You certainly don't need to be in a union to buy and sell goods in the U.S. Get off your kick about the unions, you're trying to take this story somewhere else. I SAID TO EDUCATE YOURSELF....WHERE? It'll be ok, just relax and have a cold one on me.

Charlie when the HANDOUT is gone then what? You people with your hands always open and saying gimme gimme are a real asset to mankind. It is time to start thinking of others instead of your own greed. IF what you want out of life is handouts then please move to a third-world country that can accommodate you. IF you want something don't take it or expect it to be given to you. WORK for it, no matter what type of work it is. McDonald's builds character and pride. You have one life, make it count for something. I'd rather support my family working for $5/hour than begging or taking or stealing from others to support them. At least then I would be teaching my children the value of PRIDE and HONESTY. I know that I'm speaking without being in your shoes but I've worked three jobs that paid minimum wage to support myself and it is a great feeling! No one can take that away!

I know my bank did not work with me. I called to let them know that we were going thru financial difficulties due to health problems with someone who was contributed financially in my household. Believe it or not they said they could not help. After falling behind 5 months they want to work something out but I would have to pay the 5 months worth of my mortgage to get the paperwork started with NO guarantee that I would be approved to get a lower interest rate. Now if they would have worked with me from the beginning and guaranteed a lower interest for about a year than maybe I would have been able to keep my house. I say to the banks too bad for you because you lost someone who invested 10 years in their home with no prior problems until the last year or so. I wasn't asking them to let the 5 months go unpaid but to see if we could come to a lower amount that we could afford.

Randy- your an A$$. I am a proud union employee of a local utility company. IF it wasn't for the union I would not have the benefits that are almost 100% employer paid and I make a very good wage!!! Do you want us all to work at Walmart for minimum wage and no benefits? The problem with this country is that there are not enough unions and that our wonderful government gives huge tax breaks to companies that move out of the country to find cheap labor. Don't blame the unions!!! I hope the Employee Free Choice Act things will change- You say educate yourselves- so there aren't any college graduates in financial trouble? I don't have a college degree and I am thankful everyday for my UNION JOB!!!

The reason property taxes went crazy were because of a lawsuit that initiated by a Lake county resident. Do your homework on that one, you'll find it. I'm not a union guy; I said buy American to keep the money here. I don't care if the big three auto companies deunionize. Did you know that 3 of the top 10 wealthiest people in America are part of the Walmart family. Yet look at how much they pay their people, and they buy goods at a dirt cheap price in other countries. What good have they done to help our economic situation for long term. All they did was increase enrollment in medicaid, WIC and other state benefits, paid by you and I. This problem is deeper than I initially spoke of responder. How do you think we're not in a world economy? Maybe I'm selfish, I know were in a global economy, I'm just trying to keep as many people employed in the U.S. Intellectual property is part of the equation. You still need general laborers though, which makes up the majority here. Get real

Instead of bailing out the companies why don't the government split the money to the people of the US..maybe the homeless will have homes and money to spare for retail.

To all the people who are in trouble because of layoffs, or loosing your job because your company closed or went over seas, I hope you get all the help you need to be able to stay in your home . To all the people who just had to have that big house they knew they could,nt afford, or the people who should,nt of gotten loans for a house anyway but the dem congress pressured the banks into giving you a loan even though they knew you,d never be able to pay it back, I say tough luck, you made your own bed now sleep in it , don,t expect the tax payers to bail you out. Why should you get a better interest rate then someone who pays their mortgage on time?

The manufacturing jobs are leaving for good. They will never come baqck... This was predicted over 10 years ago that this would happen. I will NEVER buy any american product that wass produced by a union as UNIONS are the ones who have destroyed this country. Talk about greed. Making 80K a year to install locks on a ford? Making 80K to do any job that you can bring anyone off the street to learn within the week should be minium wage. Wake up, educate yourself and move on. We are not in a global economy, products will go where they can be made cheaper. Intellectual property is where the future is headed. I agree that property taxes are high in St. Joseph Country. The reason why this had to be done was that many people in St. Joseph county do NOT pay their property taxes. So those who do have to compensate. They just restarted the tax sale a few years ago but for many years nothing happened to those who did not pay their taxes. High Tax = Push the Poor Out = Increase Quality

People losing their jobs and their homes and the mayor and county gov want to enact more taxes? these idiots better wake up and look around and realize people have no more to give(Forceably taken).

I remember warning Mayor Luecke not too long ago with several others at the County City Building when the property taxes went sky high. You might remember that on television. I'm not blaming him, I blame guys like Bauer who didn't help us. Remember; we're one of only two counties in this state with very little property tax relief. With the manufacturing sector losing jobs because of greed of cheap labor overseas, and Walmarts and local dealorships pushing foreign products made in Asia somewhere, this problem will only continue to kill our economy. Until people realize that you must keep jobs here, and buy only American made products, nothing will change. Buy only GMC, Ford and Chryslor vehicles. Don't wait on our government to help, they can only slow down the bleeding with the bailout money. That's a short term fix people; please change your buying habits and quit helping Walmart, Sam's... Maybe you'll pay a little more elsewhere, but you're keeping it in our country.

a word to the county and mayor.......DO NOT RAISE TAXES!! Close what you have to close, be it the zoo, parks etc.... But do not impose an option tax. We have been taxed to death. It's a hard road, closing attractions, but it has to be done. At least for the time being.

This problem is probably worse in northern to northwestern Indiana because of the casinos in Michigan City and New Buffalo.
