As the Irish prepare to face Boston College on Saturday, head coach Charlie Weis received very bad news this week about his injured leg.
An MRI Wednesday showed Weis has pretty much destroyed his left knee.
Weis suffered the devastating injury during Notre Dame's win over Michigan back in September. He has avoided surgery but it appears he won't be able to avoid it in the long run.
"That was really encouraging when they say, 'well, you tore the ACL, MCL, PCL, lateral meniscus and the posterior capsule ,' which I don't even know what that is," Weis explained Thursday night about his conversation with his doctors.
"And then they threw in a fracture of your femur on top of it right there. It was a heck of day," Weis said sarcastically.
The injury is so severe that Weis will not be able to have the surgery in South Bend. No one in the area is capable of performing it.
"It's about as bad as it gets," Weis said. "It's not even an athletic knee, it's a trauma knee---like getting hit by a car."
"You guys saw it. That's probably about what it looked like."
Weis himself has not seen video of his injury. He says the pain he's experienced is evidence enough for him of how bad it is.
Weis says he will continue to try rehab and wait until well after the season before deciding on surgery.
He doesn't see how he will be able to avoid it however. He believes he'll have the procedure done in early March.
He will then spend spring practice in crutches and on a golf cart. He believes he should be at 100% by the time training camp begins next August.
