Those who've overcome disabilities to help contribute to their community were honored Wednesday at the 20th Annual Disabilities Awareness Luncheon, held at the Century Center in South Bend.

The event honors individuals with disabilities who worked in competitive jobs in 2008. It also pays tribute to the employer that hired them.

“We take one Wednesday in October to honor those with disabilities who have been in the work force and demonstrating that just because you have a disability doesn't mean you can't live a productive life and have a good job,” said Debie Coble, Chairman of the Disability Awareness Committee.

Rick Melton, the director of art at LaVille High School was the keynote speaker. In 1985, a car accident left him with severe spinal cord injuries.

Thank you for holding a program such as this. Everyone of these people deserve applause for being active in the community, and not letting their 'disablity' get in the way of living a full life. Rick Melton is a wonderful asset to the LaVille staff. He cares about his students, volunteers spare time at the games, runs the Art Club, and still has time for his family.
