As we first told you last week, Mishawaka's Scott Brass is laying off 78 employees and might be closing its doors for good.

The company is based in Cranston, Rhode island, but has two factories in our area-- Mishawaka and New Carlisle.

One of those laid off Mishawaka workers talked to Newscenter 16 about her job loss and financial worries. The worker talked, but asked that her face not be shown and that her name not be used. She says she's still optimistic that her job might come back.

She says because her company's bank, Wachovia, is in financial trouble-- they can't borrow money to operate. That means employees are out of a job. That's a tough pill to swallow for nearly 80 people from our area. Many have had a steady job at Scott Brass for years.

“Friday night we got a phone call. They said the plant was closed and not to come in, cause we was scheduled to work that night,” says the laid off worker. “I'm very shocked and saddened because I liked working there, most people did, they were a pretty fair company.”

Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea says he got a letter from the company explaining its financial dilemma. “A couple reasons, the drop in the price of copper- how that affected their inventory and assets- and ultimately some issues related to their banking,” explains Rea.

Scott Brass's bank, Wachovia, is in the middle of a takeover-- and that means the company hasn't been able to borrow money to operate.

No jobs also means no health insurance for these workers. “They tell us at 5:30 that we're out of work and then Saturday we don't have any insurance either, we thought we'd have at least a week or so.”

By phone, Newscenter 16 spoke with several other laid off employees. Some say they were surprised by the abrupt layoffs, but others said they saw it coming.

While the layoffs seems very real right now, some workers say they're still holding out hope-- hope that the company will get financing and they'll in turn get their jobs back. “It sounds like we still have some hope. I'm holding on to that at least, so that we might have some hope of going back.”

Newscenter 16 also made several phone calls to the Local Teamster's Union 364 for a comment. When this story aired, phone calls hadn’t been returned.

Newscenter 16 also contacted Scott Brass headquarters in Rhode Island. The company has not yet released any official comment to the media.

Meantime, it’s unclear what’s in store for Scott Brass’ New Carlisle plant. The plant was up and running on Monday, but no one could comment on the future of the jobs there.

You can't have no problem at all with a system where you pay for things with money you don't have and complain when things fail. You can't go along with such a system and then expect sympathy when it stumbles. I envy my great grandfather who came to America from Sicily at the beginning of the last century. He lived in the last days when you could pay for things with money you had, like a house. His boss didn't own him. The bank didn't own him. And he had an American flag on a tall pole embedded in a tree stump in the front yard (I say this as someone who is not into flag waving) - because he liked being free and able to work for the money he needed; not constantly owing somebody. That seems to be a very rare quality in people, anymore.

I have to disagree with being overpaid.I did a job there that if i went any were else I would have been paid more but the management half the time didnt know what they were doing, which put us behind so in order to make our on time deliveries we had to work so much over time. I remember getting over 1300 dollars a week for months because we were so behind due to the mismanagement of that place. So to mr overpaid no job,you can got to hell im not crying

My guess would be since Macain is scared because he has been doing so much bashing other wise he would stay with the program and not try to get voters to revert to bad tactics. You go Macain set your own downfall

Anon Oct 14th 12:51PM - Why do you people always blame Democrats? Seems to me there has been a Republican heading this country for the past 8 years and it really is in bad shape. Stop the blaming already both parties are at fault..... And the Ignorant people like you.

Perhaps a degree in ditch digging would benefit us all.

These people have no where to go because they were over paid to begin with. Anyone who has better themselves, furthered their education will have a job. I have never had a problem getting a descent paying job but of coarse the whole time I have been making a wage that was in alignment with the skills I had. Not being over paid where you learn everything you need to know of the first few days of the job. Now these indivuals are cying because they were living a life style above their means and now have no more skill then a high school graduate that works at McDonalds.

The workers should blame the democrats for their socialist programs of letting people get bad debt.

This is sad, again so many people without work and nowhere to go! Those that have jobs should be luckey to have one! There are going to be many children this year that won't be having a Christmas.. so so sad!

Before anybody writes in about my comments on Linda, I spelled evidentially wrong, my bad but I,m not a union worker.

Posted by: Kevin Location: SB on Oct 14, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Linda: evedentially it does,nt take much to be qualified to be a union worker.I know a person who while going thru his apprenticesip to be a union sheet metal worker who flunked the same class three times, yet they could,nt get rid of him because of the union. And if you,re a union worker then perhaps you could learn how to spell SOUR GRAPES not sore grapes.

Indiana is turning into the New West Virginia. A state full of out of work people whipped up by conservative right wing religious extremists.

Nobody owes you a job.

Posted by: Bobbie Location: South Bend on Oct 14, 2008 at 09:59 AM
Why do you think jobs have gone elsewhere. Unions don't have what it takes anymore. You go on strike, someone is always willing to work. I do hope the people who lost their jobs...this will be a temporary thing.

Well, it's obvious Willie gets his news from SNL.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 14, 2008 at 08:08 AM
Of course the union is not going to comment. Where there is no money, the union is not interested. I'll be surprised if the union actually helps these people seeing the place is probably under for good.

Wachovia's demise was brought about by Herb And Marion Sandler (liberal democrats), who sold them $24B worth of bad debt. If you haven't heard this through regular media outlets, I'm not surprised.

Get off your union excuses! Perhaps you weren't qualified enough to work in a union shop? Sore grapes?!
