Weis: I watched the play 50 times, still not sure
A day after a heartbreaking loss at North Carolina, Charlie Weis discusses what he thought happened on the "Down by contact or fumble" play with under 10 seconds left in the game. Posted: 9:59 PM Oct 12, 2008Reporter: Angelo Di Carlo Email Address: angelo.dicarlo@wndu.com |

Everyone has their opinion on what happened after Michael Floyd caught a pass with eight seconds left inside the Tar Heel 10 during Saturday's 29-24 loss at North Carolina.
As Floyd went down, the ball came loose. It was originally ruled that Floyd was down on contact. After reviewing the play, the call was reversed. It was ruled a fumble and Carolina took possession with two seconds left and won the game.
Had the Irish maintained possession, they would have had one last play to try and win the game.
After finally being able to watch the replays himself, Charlie Weis gave his thoughts on Sunday on what happened.
"I thought they pulled him down with three or four seconds to go. We were then going to spike the ball. When we spiked the ball they had 12 guys on the field. So even if there was one second to go, it would have been a 12 men on the field penalty on them, and we would have gotten one more play," Weis explaining during his day after the game press conference.
"In reality, what happened is they got buzzed. This is from what I understand. They got buzzed before we spiked the ball and ruled that the ball was out and they recovered the ball, and that was it."
Weis still isn't sure if the call was right or not, even after watching the replay plenty of times.
"I sat there and watched the play 50 times this morning myself. In none of those 50 times did I have the answer to the test. I mean, was it out? Was his shoulder down? Was his shoulder down? To this time, I don't know that."
Since the originally ruling was down by contact, the officials would have to have indisputable evidence that it was a fumble to overturn the call. Weis did say he had a hard time understanding how the officials had when after watching it so many times, he still can't tell.
"But I'm not going to sit there and whine about it and take away from their win and our loss."
Weis went on to explain that the replays work both ways as was evidence by a UNC completion two minutes prior that was ruled incomplete after review. Had it not been overturned, the Tar Heels would have been able to run out the clock.
He also was impressed with the way his team handled the loss. He felt they have come a long way from last season. This team was not embarrassed by Saturday's loss, they were upset because they expected to win.
"When you lose a game, and you go into the locker room and see your team as visibly disappointed as I saw them [Saturday]---probably as disappointed as I've seen the teams since 2005 USC-- you know that they care," Weis said.
"You know that they expected to win and they didn't win, which is the only reason for them to be in the tank the way they were. When your team's starting to act like that and starting to think like that, and starting to feel like that, you've turned a corner in the right direction."
