The Berrien County Sheriff's Department has apprehended a murder suspect after a morning manhunt.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday morning, a Michigan State Police trooper tried to stop a speeding vehicle on US 12. The driver, 41-year-old Ronald Edwards Smith of Niles, refused to stop, and fled in his vehicle.

Smith finally abandoned the vehicle near the Stevens Motel on M-51. Officers learned the vehicle was stolen, and Smith is wanted in Hickory Hills, IL as part of a homicide investigation.

Smith was pursued on foot and over 60 law enforcement officers from numerous agencies helped in the search.

He was finally located in a tree behind the Rural King Store, near the intersection of 13th and Ontario. Smith was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.

A second individual was found in the room at the Stevens Motel at Smith had also occupied. Authorities found evidence of narcotics and counterfeit currency.

As a result of the manhunt, Brandywine school officials made the decision to put all four schools in the district under lockdown while authorities searched for Smith.

School officials say the lockdown lasted from around 9:45 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Thursdaymorning.

Christ the King School in South Bend was also briefly under lockdown. School officials heard about the search and immediately brought in all students who were outside the building at the time. Shortly after going into lockdown, school officials learned authorities apprehended Smith.

How would you like the police to notify everyone? You have no idea how many times I have told people by PA to get back in the house and they want a 10 minute explanation.

This is not the Eddie Smith from Brandywine area is it? Sounds like it might be. Oh Eddie what have you done now!!

So how were all the people in their homes supposed to be notified? Was a police officer supposed to walk to each home and let them know? It could have been on the news, but there is no guarantee everyone would hear or see it. With everything happening so fast.....how should they have let everyone know?

I was going down 933 this morning and saw all the police traveling at a high rate of speed. I now know what they were going after, but please people when you see an emergency vehicle with light and sirens flashing would you please pull over or come to a complete stop. Get out of the way what if this folks were coming to rescue a member of your family would you want some one to hold up their efforts? No you would'nt casuing these people to slow down is a driving offense or blocking their way is also a driving offense you may get a way with it now, but cause an accident and see what happens

Great Job catching the guy but, no one cared to let the people in their homes know. People were outside in their yards oblivious to as what was going on, while this guy was running around. People should have been alerted
