With Hurricane Ike bearing down on the Gulf Coast region, many Americans are worried that gas prices may increase in response.

Around South Bend, however, the prices have not jumped very much, and most stayed below $4.00 a gallon Friday.

But Kentucky's governor declared a state of emergency and invoked the state's anti-gouging law after prices rose dramatically.

Michigan's governor also spoke out, telling drivers that there is no reason to worry yet about gas prices increasing.

"Please do not panic," urged Gov. Jennifer Granholm. "There should not be a rush to gas stations. There is ample supply now to meet the current demand."

Granholm pledged to find and prosecute any gas stations involved with price gouging.

I think OPEC blamed the recent jump ON Gustav damage(Anon at 3:31).

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 14, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Why did the prices not seem to jump with Gustav but they did a lot more with Ike? Is it because it's larger, it's doing more damage to them down there? I never saw any real jump with Gustav and I was ready for it..

That's funny -- gas prices here in Phoenix are about 3.35 to 3.50 max...

Ok,so prices are going up and gas is in 'short supply'. What that tells me is we 1. Don't have enough refineries 2. Have no place to store produced gas,no inventory. If we have no gas in storage anywhere,we're in trouble. And I'd have to ask why is that the case? And more than likely that ISN'T the case and we DO have some supply of gasoline in storage and it IS gouging!I would find it very hard to believe we are running a 'just in time' gasoline refining operation. Maybe the country needs a 'gasoline reserve' too? One thing I would do is >force< the Oil. Co's to build more refineries. This isn't a option,it's a directive as there are national interests at stake. At least two more large ones and not in the same spot there in Texas,so one friggin hurricane can't knock em all out. We need to start taking a hardline with these Oil Co's. No more letting them dictate the conversation, you either do it or pay a nice, large,'record' fine...

Wake up people! If you want the price of gas to go down boycott the gas stations. It wouldn't kill any of you to let your car or truck sit for 2-3 days. And whatever you do NEVER, I REPEAT NEVER fill up. You are only aiding the gouging by filling your tank. If they can't move the gas to the consumers you will see the cost come down. Simple economics, supply and demand.

you know price on grape rd is at $5 a gal

Posted by: me Location: cassopolis on Sep 13, 2008 at 10:29 AM
With everyone rushing to the pumps the oil companys/gas companys want that then they would say well the demand is there. So if you need to put gas you should but if you really don't wait to put the gas. It is actually the people who make the price go up because the panic.

I was told yesterday that gas will go up to $5 per gallon by the end of the day... So, I went out and filled up mt gas tank, not been out yet to see if the rumor was true.

so much for a free market civilized world. any reason what so ever raises the price of gas anymore

Posted by: Glenn Location: Nappanee on Sep 13, 2008 at 08:09 AM
As with everything else, price gouging laws will only ever be effective if enforced. And they're not. When someone yells "fire", someone has to be rational, but none of us individualy are as dumb as all of us collectively.

Prices this morning in LaPorte were at $4.39/gal. Unbelievable. How about MITCH calling for a emergency and anti-gouging laws to be enacted here? Wouldn't surprise me if by this afternoon we're at $4.75 or much higher...why? Because there's zero, nada oversight over gas pricing and we can be ripped blind....that's why.

Got an email this morning from friend. His dad delivers fuel. Wholesale price of gas is $4.30 a gallon today. Some stations in Michigan are at $5.50 already.

Posted by: Don on Sep 13, 2008 at 12:43 AM
who started the over $5.00 a gallon rumor? Everbody in niles was talking about it and long lines to fill up. I haven't seen anything in the news that proves this right????

Posted by: Kathy Location: South Bend on Sep 12, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Indiana's governor should look into the gas gauging that is going on in South Bend. Price for crude oil is below $100 a barrel, yet the price at the pump went up from $3.62 to $3.99 a gallon - that is $.37 in just 36 hours. What's the scoop?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 12, 2008 at 10:46 PM
They should do the same thing in Indiana, but our governor doesn't give a damn so the gas stations continue to gouge and "steal" from us everyday!!!
