A South Bend school is among eight Hoosier schools recognized for achievement by the U.S. Department of Education.

Christ the King in South Bend was named a Blue Ribbon School.

The No Child Left Behind/Blue Ribbon Schools awards go to K-12 schools that either make significant gains in closing the achievement gap, or demonstrate academic superiority.

Liberty Park Elementary School in Indianapolis, Rousseau McClellan School in Indianapolis and St. Casimir School in Hammond were all selected because at least 40 percent of their disadvantaged students have dramatically improved in achievement.

Indiana schools in the top 10 percent of the state with fewer than 40 percent of disadvantaged students are Christ the King, Centerton Elementary in Martinsville, Hazel Dell Elementary in Noblesville, Signature School in Evansville, and Union Township Middle School in Valparaiso.

Indiana’s eight Blue Ribbon Schools were among 320 schools honored nationally this year. The Department of Education determines how many schools in each state are eligible to receive the award based on the total number of K-12 students and schools in that state.

At Swanson Elementary the staff CARES about the children. They KNOW all the children and work diligently to build the unique capabilities of each child. I have a daughter who has ADHD, developmental disabilities, throw in the high functioning autism and you have a handful! They have helped her with some amazing accomplishments. My son who has aspbergers went there also. again wonderful things came from his time there. Now I home school him because when he went to middle school, well lets just say I was "disappointed" in the lack of communication, empathy and knowledge of my sons disorder. Now after the fact, I have realized that we as parents need to be more pushy and aggressive with our children's needs. It is a partnership that the parents have to be involved in. Communicate with the school, more than just at parent teacher conferences. Still the staff at Swanson has some type of spark, a passion for teaching and loving the children that you don't find very often. Theyre role modles!

I am the parent of four children, of which the two older went to public schools in South Bend. The two younger, whom are a few years younger, went to a pahrocial school from kindergarten through eighth grade. I saw the public school system going down hill from the late 70's till now. My two younger did much better then children in public school because there is a standard for discipline. You sign an agreement at the beginning of each school year that if your child(ren) are disruptive, the will be discharged from attending the school. When you are paying money out of your pocket, you as a parent are more likely to pay attention to your child's behavior, educationaly and disciplinary actions. Therefore, I believe, until parents take the neccessary responsibility of manageing their children when it comes to education, children are going to continue to dumb down. That will put our country in a VERY DANGEROUS position in the world. Parents, it's time to take control.

Can we give a standing Ovation to Christ the King and let them enjoy the glory.

No child left behind is a huge joke. There will always be someone left behind. There were low functioning kids when I went to school in the 60's and 70's. We are not all the same-all unique.

Alot of people do not understand the reason for South Bend's magnet and academy schools. They can change their names to all these fancy names but it will still not change anything. the whole reason why they had to start making these schools academies and so on is because they are all under probation by the state. And when they change their school to an academy or a fine arts or traditional or montessori or whatever they are buying themselves time. I have seen personally kids harassed at LaSalle to where the child doing the harassing should have been kicked out and they swept it under the carpet. I know a child who was sexually harassed by a student so bad that her asthma attacks( her mom at first thought they were) were actually panic attacks. It is a joke. SBCSC wants to keep saying it is improving. Kick the lady off the school board who looks like she just fell off a truck.

I just wanted to post these comments. I have Children who are in the sbcsc. First of all I want to say that the school board does not care about our children. If they did they would not have outed Dr. Zimmerman. They just could have waited till his contract was up. That extra money could have went to our schools. Also I have children that go to Dickinson Intermediate and today a teacher got something thrown at her and fell and was put in the hospital. Also another child in the school got pushed and was rushed to the hospital. This school is out of control. The language and bullying is out of control. They really need extra security and need to quit ignoring issues and making parents more accountable for their child's actions. It is very sad when you have a class of 25 or more kids and only 3-5 out of that whole class are interested in learning. I think alot of teachers are actually scared of these children. This school has this thing happen every day. This school needs some attention.

I don't think sbcsc as the ability to ever become a blue ribbon school. Maybe Tarkington does. The key to having a great school is having parents involved in the child's education. That will never happen in most south bend community schools. To many thugs and low life parents who don't care if their kids finish school. That will never change. Congrats to Christ the King School. It's a great school with great staff and students.

Of course they can close the gap, there are very few low kids there, they can ship them off to the public schools.
