A Michiana girl escaped life-threatening injuries when she was hit by a car Tuesday afternoon in Mishawaka.

It happened just after 4:00 p.m., in the 600 block of West Fourth Street.

Police say the girl darted between parked cars, and the driver wasn't able to stop in time.

Police encourage kids to cross only at street corners, and say the accident also serves as a reminder to drivers.

“We urge drivers who are in our area, in our neighborhoods, to slow down and be prepared for that child that may dart out in front of you,” said Lt. Tim Williams of the Mishawaka Police Department. “I think that may have been one of the things that helped out today. The good thing is you have a driver that was paying attention and not driving as fast as some of the complaints we've had in this area.”

Police say the girl went to the hospital after complaining of head and back pain.

Again, they say her injuries are not life-threatening.

last year i was driving down mishawaka ave and a little girl on a bike darted out in front of me, i nearly missed her. parents, teachyour kids some common sense and teach them how to properly cross the street and how to ride a bike along a busy street.

Welcome to Michiana where we blame the victim! According to the penut gallery every accident is the fault of the victim. I hope that the little girl will be ok.

I remember when I was a kid my parents and police ticketed kids and parents for what they call jay walking. We were taught or made to obey that rule. I am 45. What happen to that law?

I can not believe Saturn would take a story like this as a chance to advertise. Pretty sad for them.

To those that talk about kids and parents. I live right where this happened. The parents on these 2 blocks are very good about watching thier kids. They all work together to watch each others kids as well. This street West 4th has turned into a race track and a drunk driving Haven. Anytime of day there are at least 4 or 5 cars an hour racing down 4th street. They are anywhere from 40 to 70MHP. And then there are the bars in the area that when someppl leave they race out down the street ( mostly motorcycles). Every parent in area has complaind about speeding cars and bikes. Kids will dart! remember this. It is up to us as drivers to watch for them as well as them watching for us. They (kids)dont always make the smart call. It is up to us to watch out so if they dont we can try and react in time to avert an accident. To those drivers who use 4th street and the other 2nd roads. these are family streets watch out for kids. If you have to go faster use main roads where it is safer

I agree with Brad. Parents need to be responsible for their own kids. I raised mine and watched him and provided for him and am still taking care of him while he is going to college. There are young kids-3-4-5 years old that are TOTALLY UNSUPERVISED running up and down our street. They could run out in front of any car or be swiped up in a fraction of a second. There are people who do drive up and down neighborhood streets way too fast.

When are the parents going to take responsibility for not teaching their kids safety, they should have been ticketed for their child not using the crosswalk. This thing about "Kids dart drive smart is ridiculous", children need to be supervised. Streets are for vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian travel(at designated crosswalks), they are not a playground. This does not however excuse people failing to obey the speed limit. The police need to be monitoring both vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area and ticketing violators.

Parents please watch your kids and please teach them to watch the road and pay attention. I live in a subdivision so I expect kids in the streets but I am still amazed at the really small ones who are playing in the street and NO parents around. Of course always drive defensively!

I live on East 4th street and I know that people DO drive way to fast on our streets. Especially with so many kids in the area you shouldn't be going faster then 25 in my opinion. I pray that the little girl is ok and heals well.

I am not at all surprised at this. Last night (Tuesday) at 5:30 I was driving down 6th street in Mishawaka and there were kids all over the place. One child crossed the street in front of my car without looking at all. Worst of all the childs parents were standing in the front yard and didn't react at all.

i live on east 4th street and these kids run in and out of traffic all day, they walk down the middle of the road like they own it and do not get out of the way for cars even when they are honked at. then there are the cars that think its a race track traveling 50 mph through here. Its basically like traveling down lincolnway. all I can say is this girl is lucky the one that hit her was doing the speed limit, I hope she is ok and decides to stay out of the roadway. the police are often in our area, but nothing ever seems to get done.its a shame there is a park not 3 blocks away and these kids choose to hang out in front of our homes and streets.
