The Run Jane Run events kick off this weekend in St. Joseph County.

The women-only events benefit programs offered to women and children at the St. Joseph County YWCA.

NewsCenter 16’s Tricia Sloma met one local woman who not only survived abuse with the help of the YWCA, but is now a success story and an inspiration to others.

A woman, who we will only identify as Janette, sought help at the YWCA after her ex-husband was about to be released from prison.

He was thrown in jail for attacking her with a knife and holding her young son hostage.

“It was just the grace of God that he got out of it alive, so did I. I sustained about a hundred stitches in each hand from fighting him off,” says Janette.

At the YWCA, Janette found programs and counseling, but most of all, she found peace and safety.

“I was able to sleep peacefully. I wasn’t looking over my shoulder. I knew that this place would protect me. That someone was always looking out for us,” Janette explains.

Last year, over 1,300 women and children were helped at the YWCA, and Janette says that it is more than a safe place - it’s a miracle.

“You have to get to a point where you get tired of being tired. Places like this give women a place to seek out some home, some empowerment,” she says.

Empowerment that will change lives forever.

Janette and her son have moved on. She has a job at a daycare facility and looks forward to getting her college degree.

“I have an attitude of gratitude to the Y. They helped save my life, they helped my son save his life,” says Janette.

The women-only Run Jane Run events start this weekend.

Saturday marks the 5k and 10k run and walk at St. Patrick’s County Park, Sunday is the bike event at Bendix County Park, and the golf scramble will be held Wednesday, August 27.

My wife beats the crap out of me all the time. Can I go to the YMCA and get free room and board as well as 3 hot meals a day?

To bad it's only services for women! I went thru a domistic with my second wife and after putting me in the hospital. She was aressted and charged. But guess what? No help for men. Why? I guess it's something we aren't suppose to talk about. Well I say bull crap. We get hurt and abused the same and I don't care who you are. It's not right for anyone

Umm, how about teaching these gals how to shoot a gun so they can protect themselves incase the abuser comes back. I remember Lisa Bianco and I'm glad Alan Metheny got what he deserved. Men that knock women around are losers.

I was an abused woman. If it were not for the agencies available to women in situations, such as this one, I would have stayed with my abuser and most likely I would not be here today. Thank you for helping us. I am now safe, have a good job, and loving life.

This is a wonderful thing! Domestic violence is everywhere! People need to understand that they probably know someone that is suffering from domestic violence, and may not know it. Women don't just come out and say, "Hey, by the way, did you know that my boyfriend/husband is beating the crap out of me? Please pass the mustard." I am a survivor, and no one knew when I was being beaten, until I got out. Now all of my family and friends can remember all of those little subtle signs that they didn't pay attention to...not by any real fault of their own. No one would have thought that my (now ex) was an abuser. Abusers are very good at manipulating everyone's perception of them. They are very conscious of thier appearances. That is how they are able to get away with what they do to women behind closed doors. No one knows, and their woman is so tortured and terrified that she won't tell... Programs like the YWCA are a Godsend. There needs to be one in EVERY city. Awesome story!
