All 23 dogs found in a South Bend garage will be going to new homes despite a court judgment awarding custody of one of the canines to its former owner.
The dogs were found June 24th. South Bend Animal Care and Control officials say the dogs appeared to be fed and had water, but many had matted fur and skin conditions, and some had a genetic eye disorder.
Owner Bernard Turner was cited for violating ordinances and gave up custody of all but one of the dogs, a Yorkshire terrier. But animal control officer Kim Lucas says Turner didn't meet a deadline to have the dog licensed, sterilized and vaccinated, and it's now been adopted.
Officials still are looking for new homes for five of the dogs.
