Record high gas prices may have played a factor in the recent Monaco Coach plant closing, but the pain at the pump is not expected to keep people from attending the 30th Annual Venetian Festival.

Festival Vice President Melissa Schultz believes organizers have planned a weekend that will draw in people of all ages, and not just from the local area.

"I think, because people are staying home, they're enjoying what we have to offer here, and you've got basically a 90-mile radius that people are willing to travel. Chicago, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo -- we're getting people from everywhere," she says.

The band Loverboy performed Friday night, and there are several concerts planned for the weekend, including a performance by Mitchel Musso of Hannah Montana fame.

It is because of the out of towners that the Venetian Festival has gotten out of control. Most St. Joseph people leave the area for this weekend and leave it for the out of towners to trash. It is not fun anymore.

It's nice that the tax payers and the city of south bend has paid for our fine police officers to take their squad cars all the way to the venetian fest. i'm so glad my tax dollars paid for their trip up their. I hope they had a good time with their family on us tax payers....

I've had nothing but bad experiances when going to this festival so I believe I'll save my gas and stay home this year!!! It's no longer for the local people and everything is way over priced!!!
