Three people were rushed to the hospital after a crash Friday involving an ambulance headed to the hospital.

It happened about 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Cleveland and Bendix roads on South Bend's northwest side.

Police say the ambulance was on Cleveland taking an injured biker from the RedBud motocross track to the hospital.

It had its lights and siren on but broad-sided an SUV going south on Bendix.

A passenger in the SUV had to be cut out and was taken to the hospital, along with the already injured biker, and one other patient.

Police say fortunately, no one else was hurt.

The SUV bounced into another car in the right turn lane, and debris from the crash damaged a fourth car as well.

Even though we just began the holiday weekend, that wasn't the only serious accident in St. Joseph County on Friday.

There was also a late afternoon accident involving 3 cars on U.S. 31 near Lakeville, and earlier in the day, a one-car roll-over accident on the toll road.

And police say, unfortunately, accidents and the 4th of July often go hand in hand.

Fortunately, police say there were no fatalities in any of those accidents, mostly just minor injuries.

But they say it's discouraging that there have already been so many accidents so early in the holiday weekend, and they hope drivers start using a little more sense out on the road.

Police say the accident on Bendix involving the ambulance, is a good example of a lapse of concentration.

“Your first priority when you’re driving is to drive. Pay attention to what’s in front of you, that’s what you got to do, because you’re talking a 3,000 or 4,000 or 5,000 pound vehicle and when something goes wrong, it gets bad quickly,” said Sergeant Bill Kraus with South Bend Police.

It got bad quickly in the accident near Lakeville Friday afternoon, when another driver failed to yield crossing over highway 31; and just as bad just as quickly in the one-car accident on the toll road earlier in the afternoon.

An SUV rolled over when the driver reached to get something out of the back seat.

“The age old lesson, you know, it only takes a second. It only takes a second of paying attention to the road, and especially at highway speeds,” said Master Trooper Maggie Shortt with the Indiana State Police.

The family was on their way to visit family from Chicago.

Fortunately, there were only minor injuries.

“They were extremely lucky, it appears they all had their seatbelts on so they were extremely lucky,” Shortt said.

Lori Schetgen and her family made the trip to South Bend from North Carolina, but decided to avoid the holiday traffic.

“We chose days to travel before, and then we are leaving on Sunday. But if you can avoid traveling, it just makes it easier, less traffic jams fewer problems,” Schetgen said.

Even if you can't avoid the road, you can make it a point to drive safe, and avoid a dangerous result.

“Go back to when you were 16 and you got your license so you could go from point A to point B. You don’t need to have lunch or dinner or cell phone or music or whatever fell in the back, just stay safe,” Schetgen said.

Police say they're obviously concerned about tonight and tomorrow night, and their patrols are looking out for those drinking and driving after celebrating the weekend.

But South Bend police say actually for the year, crashes are way down, and they can't recall any fatal crashes within the city so far this year; which is pretty unusual.

Anonymous from July 5, 2008 @ 4:50 a.m. hit the nail on the head. I've had my license for approximately 30 years, and I honestly don't know why, but it appears to me people are getting dumber & dumber or just don't give a s*** about anyone else on the road. I am on the road a lot more than I want to be on an account of my job, and most of the time when I see an ambulance, people do not pull over like they are supposed to. It definitely was not this bad when I got my license, and I have to say it's been just the last couple of years it's gotten bad enough for me to make this assessment!

Cant you see? This is all the Mayor's fault. When he is not forcing felons to shoot eachother he is greasing the roadways of our community. Shame.

Most people in the commentary don't or can't read, their only goal is to chastise others to exalt themselves.

MM, just as an FYI, the ambulance driver was mostly at fault- she had the red light and didn't pause to check the intersection. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt. EVERYONE needs to be more cautious, pay attention when driving, and stop for emergency vehicles. The ambulance driver in this instance made a huge mistake in not pausing before blowing through the red light.

GySgt USMC - if that's your real id: I was making a sardonic remark about troops fighting over there so that people can be drunk and stupid over here. Score one for reading comprehension. Isn't it kinda belly crawling to call on mob sentiment by invoking dead soldiers? Just sayin'.

GySgt USMC Thanks for trying to belittle the sacrifices SSgt Hunsberger and Cpl Seal. anonymous isn't belittling anyone. 1st we have no business outside this country,2nd those people need to learn how to drive. 3rd thankx to the dumbing down of america thru babies momma/daddy lifestyles we will continue to have these types of incidents. the driver at fault needs to be tossed into jail, horsewhipped and forced to work in jail to pay the costs to the victims and their families. the insurance-if they have any-should not pay a dime. we need to start taking license plates of people who don't stop for sirens and the prosecutors need to fine them heavily.

To Anonymous 11:31 p.m.: I'm happy that you are blessed enough (if you want to put it that way) to live in a "gated community". I've visited some of those "communities" and they are full of self righteous pompous a_ _es! There are more accidents over on Grape and Main streets than what we have in the "ghetto" so get off your high-horse and pray for the people involved and for everyone else having to drive this weekend!

What is with people? Doesn't anyone know how to drive? You need to pay attention when driving. Not talking on your cell phone. Too many motocycle accidents out there. Alot from their own supidity with drinking and driving. Not wearing a helmet and not the proper clothing. Others are from those idiots who don't bother to stop at stop signs and stop lights. Those who come off the highway ramps and just merging into traffic without looking. Pay attention, because it could be you or a loved one who is hit and killed. Think about that.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 5, 2008 at 02:28 AM
Have you nothing else to do??? I don't think anyone involved in the accident was guilty of being "ghetto". Might I also add, many different persons celebrate the 4th of July, yes some without purpose. Besides, it sounds as if you are not doing to well for yourself if you have to complain about it......

Accidents happen, Anonymous. I hope & pray everyone has a safe and happy independence day! Stay Safe! My thoughts and prayers are with those who choose to serve & those involved in the accident. Peace.

Great Engligh there Anonymous. Not only is your posting hard to read, it is totally off topic. Troop deployments have nothing to do with ruining society. Thanks for trying to belittle the sacrifices SSgt Hunsberger and Cpl Seal.

Over here in that Bendix Cleveland area the ghetto fabulous are getting their drink on and using the day as an excuse to make more noise than usual. This is why the troops are fighting over there; so fools can ruin society for the rest of us. I guess our only alternative is to be rich enough to live in a gated community.
