The city of Saint Joseph is getting Congressional help in its bid to take over its iconic lighthouse.

As we told you in May, the Coast Guard doesn't have a use for the lighthouse anymore, so they are turning it over to a government or non-profit that wants it.

The city feels it's important to the community, so they want to control it.

Congressman Fred Upton agrees.

“I have now weighed in with a letter to the General Services Administration asking them to give Saint Joe the highest priority,” he said.

If the city gets control, the Coast Guard would still have to approve its plans, and the city would have to pay for its upkeep.

Instead of worrying about the lighthouse, trying to gather votes and getting myself re-elected, I think Fred should be working on,gas prices, the economy, taxes, the Iraq war, the mortgage crisis, health care, etc. Do something to make my life a little better! after all that is what he was elected to do.
