Thirteen days ago, an all time high at the pump for Hoosiers meant an all time low when emotions got in the way. Gas prices reached $4.19 a gallon.

Wednesday, prices like $3.79 in the morning, going back up to $3.91 in the evening shows the rollercoaster keeps going.

Ryan Deeter says, “I think it's discouraging. It's very difficult.”

That's why the 21 year-old says he decided to take a seat and listen for some possible solutions from Republican Congressional candidate Luke Puckett.

Deeter says, “I think sometimes the issues can be oversimplified in political rhetoric.”

Puckett says that’s not true.

He says, “We can bring the price of gas down. We can do it.”

Puckett’s plan is to drill and refine American oil. That's why he's taking a trip to ANWR to see if drilling there is a good idea.

Puckett says, “It's either to say we're going to drill or not drill. We're going to debunk the theory if need be or we're going to put an x on the ground and say x marks the spot.”

That's an idea his rival, Congressman Joe Donnelly, also supports.

Donnelly says, “I've said a number of times we need to be drilling in ANWR and we need to be drilling in our continental shelf.”

Again, that's another area they agree on.

Puckett says, "We have 45 billion barrels of oil off the Gulf Coast of Mexico. It doesn't matter, we have China drilling in our backyard off the coast."

Puckett says Donnelly hasn't always lived up to his claim.

Puckett says, “He's gone back and forth and voted against it and he's voted for it, but at key leadership times he has voted against drilling and refining American oil.”

The incumbent Representative says more drilling is just one part of his plan.

Donnelly says, “We also need to be doing wind and solar hydrogen and we have to be better at conserving.”

He says Congress is working on getting a bill passed that starts to put crude oil back on the market from the country's reserves.

He's also working on a plan to drive speculators out of the market by tightening regulations and demanding more "up front" money from people who buy oil contracts.

The price of oil has doubled in a year and a senior oil analyst from Oppenheimer investments testified before Congress this week and said the majority of that increase was because of speculation.

Donnelly shows his ignorance again by wanting to release national reserves to "cut gas prices". What a bunch of bull. The reserve would quickly be depleted, we would have to pay more to replace that reserve, and gas prices would be back up in no time..and even higher because the speculators know that our stockpile is down. Get him out of office!

WMD's Stanley? You do know that we didn't find any right? Every report all of our intelligence and military have written concluded that Iraq abandoned their pursuit of chemical, nuclear or biological weapons in 1991. They destroyed everythign that they had and built no more.

Anon-that article from CNN was from MAY 6, 2006! It has since been disputed. You might want some up to date research. Drill already - did you not read my post-drillin gin ANWR will not produce oil from 10 years. In that time and with those millions we could have alternative fuel by then.

Hey, it's good old Dustin Blythe! He's the one that was harassing people in my neighborhood to try to get them to support Obama.

The was not about oil. It was about fighting terrorism, and getting saddam, and the WMDs, and liberating the Iraqi people. It doesn't matter why, Bush took us there, united us, and its awesome, because he is the decider.

Stanley, one of the 20% that still supports George W. Bush. I wondered where they were hiding out. We will start getting that cheap oil and gas about the same time we are "greeted as liberators". Any day now, right?

Good ole politicians...As long as they can make us believe they are doing something, then they can continue to drag their feet in regards to actually doing something.

I agree with you Stephanie-Anon. We need to start depending on our selves and not other countries!!!

What would happen to "speculation" if the US started drilling in Anwar and the Gulf this year? The futures price would plummet, wouldn't it?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 26, 2008 at 02:17 PM
Stephanie, explain this...http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/09/news/economy/oil_cuba/index.htm

Posted by: Sue Location: South Bend on Jun 26, 2008 at 02:16 PM
Why does Puckett need to "take a trip" to Anwar? Are there no studies available. Just seems like a waste of fuel and damage to the environment

Posted by: DRILL ALREADY! on Jun 26, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Stephanie you did not read my post! It is long term! Hopefully in 5-10 years someone here in America will come up with something. God help us from here on out. The damn Congress and Senate sure don't! They are rich, why should they care about us! High energy bills, gas, food, they are not worried!

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Anon on Jun 26, 2008 at 12:16 PM
No, I'm not a democrat or a republican-I don't believe in labels. I support doing what is best for my family, and my country and that is getting independent of oil. America will come to it's knees with the continued dependance on oil. You don't care about the future though do you? You just want results now. I, for one, am thinking long term. If we had started researching alternative fuel 10 years ago like every other developed country instead of having the spending cut by the govenment, we would not be in the mess that we are in now.

Posted by: Stanley Location: South Bend on Jun 26, 2008 at 12:03 PM
One day, the pipes from Iraq will open. We will have $1-2 a gallon gas again. Bush won't be in office then, but the credit will be his. He had the bravery and dignity to lead in time of war. One day he will be remembered as the greatest leader in American history. Fight them over there, not here.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 26, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Stephanie, I take it you are democrat, lol! We need to drill, period! yes, its take about 10 years, when that time line runs out, we will have a different type of fuel, that will give us enough time. Do you want America to come to her knees? Keep wasting time and watch and see! Look at the truckers already, what do you think in about 5 years from now, what it will be like, scary! wake up!

Every story that they have on the internet and TV about oil has it that China is drilling off the coast of Fl. THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SAY...DRILL ALREADY, GOOD LORD! WAKE UP DEMOCRATS!

they wont open off shore drilling, they turn to the middle eastern countries please help us, dont bother to look in your on back yard, forget corn the fields in the midwest are flooded so forget ethinol, thats the problem, we have are nose in every ones elses ass but are own, start helping are own instead of every one else.

I have no issue with drilling as long as the OIL stays here for consumption by the US. Over half the oil from the alaskan pipeline goes to Japan.

Posted by: Stephanie Location: South Bend on Jun 26, 2008 at 09:47 AM
No, China is not drilling in our backyard off our coast. Luke Puckett should do some research before he spouts off stuff he doesn't know. Cheney has even stated this and it's just not true. It's an urban legends. Also, what is failed to mention is that it would take AT LEAST 10 YEARS before any useful oil would come out of ANWR, OPEC would reduce their output to keep supply high, and estimated ANWR production would only be ONE PERCENT of oil output!! Instead of drilling for oil invest in alternate fuel resources!! The oil is going to run out one day, we need to be prepared for it.

if we wouldnt be in bush's phony war, look at all the gas we would save

It's like the media is in denial that the dollar has TANKED recently. Well, trillions in debt are bad for currency

Posted by: Matthew Location: Niles on Jun 26, 2008 at 08:43 AM
When is someone going to call out Puckett on the China comment. Even VP Cheney had to admit China is NOT drilling of the coast of Florida!!!

Posted by: Sporty Location: LaPorte on Jun 26, 2008 at 07:50 AM
Because of speculation? Ya think? Heck, the majority of folks have been saying that for quite some time now. There's no supply shortage, but speculators are dreaming there is. And Donnelly, being a Democrat, surely will vote against drilling anywhere on our land, whatever he says. His party will reign him in and he'll vote party line and we'll continue to get taken at the pump. We're darned fools for not pumping all of 'our' oil we can....just plain ol fools....

Ya! "Luke Puckett" and "Joe Donnelly" are on it. Get Real. Where's Barney Fife?

Posted by: Dustin Location: Mishawaka on Jun 26, 2008 at 02:31 AM
What are the odds that Puckett is going to go to ANWR and NOT recommend drilling? Drilling is a Republican talking point this year. The fact that Donnelly, a Democrat, supports it is not stopping Puckett from running on the issue. What are Puckett's other issues, if any? Reminds me of "On day one of a Manigault administration". What about day two? Manigault and Puckett are two of a kind. A one issue candidate and a one trick pony. Maybe Puckett should reconsider running for Congress and drop out...again.
