455 property owners are slated to be affected by the widening and reconstruction of US-31 from South Bend to Plymouth, giving the name, ‘Major Moves’ a new meaning.

At an open house Monday night, homeowners and concerned citizens came to see where the plans stand, where the road will go, and if it will go through their property.

INDot is showing off their latest design plans for the project, which include about thirty percent of the project design specifications.

The design gives some homeowners a good idea how they're property will be affected, and if they'll have to move.

Leonard Leemeris learned INDot will most likely not acquire his land for construction, but the new road will be sitting just yards from his house.

“My major concern is that I have to move. I don’t want to move. If you’re going to build US-31 then I’m sitting behind a big wall like the by-pass. You want to live behind a big wall?” Leemeris wonders what his next move will be.

Lou Smith found out the state will most likely buy his property for construction. He sees it as an opportunity.

“Life moves on, you know? You cant fight about it, just pick up and move someplace else. It works out good for me because I’m retiring in 2010,” Smith tells NewsCenter 16.

The most recent plans provide 30 percent design specifications. While they provide answers for some, others are left wondering about the fate of their homes and property.

”We’re starting south and heading north and unfortunately, their answers aren’t going to be firm until we get till seventy percent designed in those segments,” Andy Dietrick, Communications Director for INDot says.

418 million dollars is budgeted for construction of this project. The money comes from Governor Daniels’s major moves fund, created by the toll road lease.

Another open house is scheduled at Newton Park from 4-7 Tuesday night.

Actually Jeff..the wiz kid. Asphalt is a petroleum product (oil based). It is one of many products that have shot up in price. Every one of those machines use gas..most diesel at now over 4.25 a gallon. Yes, it will cost at least 418 million...if not more. Better lay off the attempt at accounting there buddy.

I do not drive to SB on 31 often mostly because of the traffic. It is dangerous for any highway to have so many access points. But the money allotted is too much to fix such a short distance when we have other pressing issues like flooding (Starke County is still under water), school funding, sustainable energy to name a few. And of course our botched time zones - had to throw that one in. I won't vote for Mitch just because of that.

Since we've drifted onto the subject: Jill Long Johnson is part of the Northern Indiana Democrat Machine - a group so full of themselves that they think the rest of the state follows their lead. The problem is, they don't know how to lead, and the rest of the state couldn't care less about them.

Wait, 418 million? for a 20 mile stretch? That's $4000 PER FOOT! Holy fudge, someone's gonna retire on THAT graft!

Wahhh wahhh. Why can't you people make your cake and lay in it, ok? This has been discussed for years. It has to be done, so it won't be your whining moves. It's Major Moves! That's, like, more than just a kind-of thing, it's a pretty big deal and it's going to be a lot of road workers standing around for years. THANKS MITCH!

The amount of money it will take to fix the Kokomo problem is huge compared to this...not to mention there is no land anywhere near by. Anon...seriously...use the money to plow and salt roads? No thanks, just drive slower..I never had one problem this winter and it was the worst in a long time. Why spend that money on something that just dissolves on the roads and is not effective with the temperatures we have had when you can drastically improve the public safety of a highway that will last more then a winter season? This is a good investment. You democrats can kick and scream all you want...but you guys messed up and put Jill up against him. What kind of stupid move was that? She wasn't even overly popular when in office the last time. First you spend your votes on a presidential candidate that does not have a shot in the world, then you do the same with the governors position. What a mess the Indiana democratic party is in! Good job Gov. Mitch, keep it up!!!

Most people want this, but don't want to give up resources to make it happen. You can't have your cake and eat it too. I am surprised any resident along the path would be against this. It is just plain dangerous...people rarely slow down through the small towns and Lakeville. You have no business having a major highway routed through the downtown of a community that small. There is little speed enforcement and drivers just don't care. Mitch is getting stuff done and all some of you can do is gripe. This project does need to be done. City Employee...you kind of have a problem on your hands..the dumb democrats elected a candidate that does not have a chance in the world to win...some of them are even saying that now. Nice job.

FOR DECADES HOOSIERS HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR A MODERN LIMITED ACCESS ROAD FROM SB TO INDY AND OUR LEADERS HAVE FAILED US UNTIL FINALLY WE HAVE A GOVERNOR WHO IS GETTING THE JOB DONE AND WITHOUT ANY NEW TAX DOLLARS TO BOOT. AND ALL SO MANY OF YOU CAN DO IS COMPLAIN. I CAN'T BELIEVE JUST HOW SHALLOW PEOPLE CAN BE. I ONLY HOPE HE CAN GET THE KOKOMO BYPASS DONE NEARLY AS QUICK. GO MITCH.

why mitch?this takes away alot of farm ground and puts people out in the streets.

Maybe, just maybe the accident rate will go down here in Lapaz. I for one am excited to see this finally happening. While I'm no Mitch Daniels fan (what so ever), I can't say that I disagree with this plan.

I strongly disagree with spending 418 million for something that doesn't need to be done. The problem is between SB & Lakeville. Make a center turn lane all the way for alot less money & the problem will be solved. There will always be accidents on roads even the new bypass, however, the more safely you make the road the less there will be. Also, 418 million to save 20 min. from SB to Indy is a stupid idea from the start. Thanks Mitch - can't wait for you to be out of there!

This new stretch of US-31 will increase safety and efficiency, especially as the volume of traffic increases over time. Auto accidents frequently occur on US-31 between US-20 and US-6. Many of these accidents are due to people turning or crossing the center line. The new US-31 will greatly reduce these types of accidents. This new stretch of US-31 will eliminate at least three stoplights and the slow downs in Lakeville & Lapaz. Less stop and go driving will increase gas milage, decrease driving times, and keep traffic flowing smoothly. Also, sorry Carla but I will vote for Mitch, he has done many good things for Indiana.

Just wait . . .all the THANKS MITCHers will be out in droves . . .

The new 31 will be built, and that's the way it is. Now lets make the best of it. The Northern Indiana region needs 31 to be a superhighway to Indy. Simple as that.

Posted by: Ned on May 20, 2008 at 09:24 AM
The military requires these improvements to 31 so they'll be able to move their stormtroopers into South Bend when the NWO finally takes over. Look into strahnet! It's coming, and there's nothing you can do about it!

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on May 20, 2008 at 09:15 AM
A large proportion of US-31 between Indy & SB needs improved, and this is just one segment of the project (a 4-lane highway with no turn lanes and no median is a deathtrap). Luckily Indiana finally has a Governor far-sighted enough to secure funding for these much needed projects. Much to Carla's dismay Daniels will be re-elected for all he's done for the state; now if he could just secure funding for a skyway bridge over Kokomo...

i dont find it necessary to do this for the plymouth to south bend stretch. this money can go to many other things that still has to do with our roads...such as PLOWING snow and SALTING the roads. besides, how long does it take to get from plymouth to south bend? 20 mins? big deal.lets quit wasting our money and put it towards something more useful

Posted by: kiwi Location: goshen on May 20, 2008 at 08:58 AM
They need to eliminate Kokomo, go around, and this time don't allow to build up like last time. From SB to Plymouth has be a real dangerous stretch of road, I'm glad the new one is coming.

Posted by: Nick on May 20, 2008 at 08:28 AM
What a waste of money. There is not a need for this. Who did the study and what relative has a contruction company that is doing the work? I don't seem to remember traffic jams happening on US31 do to such a high volume of traffic. What I do remember is traffic jams due to construction that was not needed. I am backer of Mitch Daniel, the toll road lease which was long over due, but not for wasting money as this project is. There is no way anyhow can convince me this project is a good thing. To the polticians who voted for this, hope you stay in office.

Posted by: Carla Location: SB on May 20, 2008 at 01:49 AM
Mitch, kiss your governer's seat goodbye!! Maybe you could lease or sell it to a foreign company.

Posted by: JP Location: South Bend on May 19, 2008 at 11:26 PM
While I do think that this area of highway need improvement, I wish they would spend the money to make a detour around Kokomo on 31. This has to be the worst stretch of US 31 from Indy to South Bend.
