One Elkhart high school student has a new ride, thanks to his good attendance.

Memorial High School gave away a used car to a student who attained at least a 97-percent attendance rate this school year.

Patrick McCreary, a junior at Memorial, won the 1996 Dodge Stratus.

He was one of 120 students in the drawing for the vehicle.

“I actually came to school, and it paid off,” said McCreary excitedly. “I got a brand new car.”

Next week, Central High School will give away a 2001 Chevy Malibu to a student who attained a 99-percent attendance rate.

Five hundred students are eligible to win.

I hope I am assuming correctly that there had to be a car dealership that was involved, why were they not mentioned? It would be nice to know which company is supporting the children of our community!

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for this kid, but it seems like Elkhart Memorial has an attendance problem. If only 120 were eligible at EM with a 97% attendance record and 500 are eligible at EC with a 99% attendance record then EM really has a problem. And don't anyone tell me that the number of students attending each school is different because I checked and both have between 1900 and 2000 students attending. Does anyone know why there is a problem at EM with attendance?

This is pretty good. Mackenzie at Northridge High School has 13 years perfect attendance(not 97 percent 100 percent) and didn't even get channel 16 to do a story on her. They chose to do it on a kid in PA instead, after being informed of her achievment. Local news??

If that is what it takes to motivate these kids to stay in school, more incentitives may be needed like this.
