The U.S. Geologic Survey reports that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.2 has struck the Midwest around 5:30 in the morning. An aftershock with a magnitude of 4.5 was reported in the Michiana area around 11:15 a.m.

The USGS Web site says the quake was centered near West Salem, Illinois, or about 40 miles north of Evansville, Indiana. The quake was felt as far away as Milwaukee, 350 miles to the north. Skyscrapers shook in Chicago's Loop, 240 miles north of the epicenter, and in Indianapolis, 160 miles to the northeast. People in Cincinnati and St. Louis also felt the earth shake.

The U.S. Geological Survey says this morning's quake happened in a region known as the Illinois basin-Ozark dome, which does not usually get quakes. The biggest on record, a 5.4, happened in 1968.

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Todd Ringle says there are no immediate reports of damage. Ringle says he was shaken out of his bed in the Evansville area by the earthquake.

A dormitory at Vincennes University was evacuated, but there were no reports of damage or injuries. A Vincennes University spokesman says 250 students were evacuated when fire alarms sounded, apparently due to the earthquake.

The earthquake was felt as far away as South Bend and Fort Wayne in Indiana. It shook tall buildings in downtown Indianapolis.

The earthquake was caught on the South Bend Skyview16 during Gordy Young's forecast. The camera was bouncing around as if there were high winds as Gordy was doing the weather.

NewsCenter16 got so many phone calls about the event that it temporarily locked up the phone system at the station.

WNDU has also been inundated with emails, with people sharing their experience this morning. Here's what some of you had to say:

"I woke up with my bed shaking and sqeeking. My vertical blinds were waving and clicking which initially made me think there was hail on my sliding glass door in my bedroom. I stood up and could not think if I should stand in a doorway or go outside. Could you you do a report on what to do in the event of a larger earthquake. I am from SC and know about Hurricanes but have never exerienced an earthquake. What a rush!"
~Patricia

"I was sitting in my front room listening to the news when I hear a rattling sound in my walls, but couldn't quite make it out. It wasn't real loud or strong, so I wasn't real sure of what I was hearing. By the time I found my remote to mute my TV, it had stopped. Then you guys came on and reported what had happened. I am glad we did not get the "full" affect from the earthquake."
~Debbie

"I live in Goshen and awoke this moring to a shaking bed. I heard things on my dresser rattling. I immediately thought "earthquake" but couldn't believe it. I jumped out of bed and ran downstairs. The dishes in my china cabinet were rattling. I looked at the dining room clock and it was 5:40 a.m. I immediately turned on WNDU and sure enough, Tricia and Gordy confirmed the earthquake. Thanks for being on top of the story. I wake every morning to Tricia and Gordy and love their interaction."
~Ruby, Goshen IN

"I live in south St. Joseph, Michigan (Scottdale area) and experinced the shaking of the earth quake this morning at about 5:40am. Furniture shook for 1 or 2 minutes. I was working out this morning when heard our African Gray Parrot flapping her wings wildly. I then heard furniture shaking. When I noticed the shaking I told myself that an earth quake had just happened. Sure enough as I was watching your broadcast this morning you reported it. I remember experiencing this same thing in southwest michigan about 40 years ago."
~Steve, St. Joseph MI

"I live between Galien and Buchanan, MI, and felt the earthquake at 5:30 AM. According to the US Gelogical Survey, the epicenter was extreme southeren Indiana near Illinois and Kentucky. The magnitude waas greater than 5."
~Arthur, Buchanan MI

"I live ½ block from Lake Michigan, in Long Beach, In. This morning at approximately 4:40 am my house started shaking and moving for approximately 30 seconds. I have lived in Los Angeles and I know what earthquake tremors feel like and this was it. Right before the tremor here this morning , my 2 cats were up and glued to the windows, growling. That was very unusual for them. There are studies that show that animals sense earthquakes prior to their quakes. Mine certainly were nervous a few minutes before. My nephew lives in Portland, Oregon and they have been having offshore quakes of a large magnitude for the last few days."
~Donna, Long Beach IN

"I live in Edwardsburg MI, on Eagle Lake and at 5:40 am this morning, I was at my home computer and suddenly I heard a slight rumbling, then realized the walls were shaking & the lamp on my desk was rattling. It was very strange to see my walls & ceiling shaking. I've never been in an earthquake so I was not sure what was going on. I looked up to my ceiling fan & the pull chains were moving. I think the quake only lasted about 20 seconds. I went to my living room & the chains were moving on that ceiling fan also."
~Brian, Edwardsburg MI

I was in bed watching tv as I felt the house shake. I could here the nick nacs on my shelves shaking along with the windows. My dog was going crazy. She was acting funny all the night before, hiding under tables and then she ran to me when it happend so I could save her. lol. It wasn't strong enought to knock anything over at my house, but it was enough to to keep me awake for a few more hours. I slept through the after shocks.

I knew something was going on, due to my bird chirping madly, and then the animals were making some really strange noises. I didnt feel anything...and find it very odd, that some are SAYING they felt it. And these folks live less than 2 blocks away. I have been in tremors, earthquakes in California..YOU feel it..and they dont hop and skip and shake one house in a block and not another. I felt no after shock, nada..and i was up at that time. Was it more southern?

interesting observation on the first quake, this showed just how much variances there are in the geology here in IN, the ground Im on we never noticed anything, yet 2 miles straight west of me along a lake, things shook pretty good, and straight north of me by 3 miles a person who was built on sandy ground, went on about how bad his house shook, with all that said, I think if we ever have a big one, the damage is going to be surprising ,from spotty locations that really get tore up to areas that might just get windows broke, just my amature geology thoughts

Did anyone else feel the after shock this morning??

I was on vacation in the most southern part of Illinois (Ozark). The quake woke up both my sisters. I slept though the whole thing.

I felt the quake at 5:37 when I was watching a show, and it wasn't a major one, and my bed and tv stand shook a little for like five seconds then no shake, I never experienced it before

About 1/2hour before it happened one of our dogs came in & just starting barking at my husband & I. My husband got up to make sure that there wasn't a problem outside or anything...of course there wasn't. Our dogs sleep through the night right along with us and don't have to go out in the middle or the night or anything so it was very unusal for either one of them to act that way. We fell back asleep & then my alarm had just gone off right before the earthquake came. I wasn't sure what it was, thought it was my husband for a moment, but found out what happened when I watched the news after I got up. It was all very interesting.

I was in southern Georgia when the quake happened, and it was not felt there. Sounds like people in our area reacted well. Glad to know there were no injuries or major damage done. I have experienced a quake in Monterey, California. I just thought my upstairs neighbors were getting a little rowdy.

I will stop all earthquakes from doing any damage.

I woke up to the brass handles on my dresser "clicking", my bed shaking and my hubby jumping up. At first I thought "earthquake" and then I thought, OK, I'm just dreaming, it's just a train with a lot of engines (train is 5 miles away & it seemed to last for a really long time) & I went back to sleep (Hey, I had an hour left to sleep!). I was bummed when I got to work & heard it was REALLY an earthquake & I didn't realize it. I emailed hubby & he was just as shocked. I wish I would have been awake enough to really experience it more. I know, sounds dumb, but you don't get that experience every day in Northern IN! I find it exhilarating (as long as there isn't major damage or casualties)! My kiddos were bummed they didn't wake up. I was surprised the indoor cats didn’t react more B4 it happened (HA, maybe they did & I just didn’t wake up for that as I’m NOT a morning person!). Well anyhow, I "kind of" experienced it!

I work in South Bend near 31 and the toll road, and I was sitting in my car waiting for a co-worker that was running a little late to show up. Around 5:35 or so. And it felt like someone was by my car and gently rocking it. I thought it was a wind gust but i didnt see the trees swaying at all. Pretty wild

I felt it. I just got up to see my husband off to work at 5:30AM and our dresser with the mirror on it was shaking and I told my husband the dresser is shaking I wonder what is going on. He was in the kitchen and the pans were shaking too. He came home from work and told me about the Earthquake and we turned on this station and watched what happened.

Must not have been that bad because I am a light sleeper and I did not hear or feel a thing. My dogs were calm as always so I do not think it lasted long at all. If so they would have gone nuts like they do with thunderstorms.

Sadly, the weather didn't even come to mind when I was awaken out of a dead sleep. The bed was shaking the shelves rattling. I thought maybe I just had experienced Astral Catalepsy. Not until later that morning when my husband got home did he tell me it was an earthquake. Pretty amazing!

I knew what it was immediately when it happened. I lived in California for 18 months. It really was not a jolt, but a rolling one. Kinda weird to have it happen here.

Posted by: Lorie Location: California on Apr 18, 2008 at 06:36 PM
To all of you who are wondering how we handle this out here in California.... as best as we can as you would in any disaster. We have earthquake drills in our schools, government building, etc. etc. It is no different than the toronado drills I went thru when I lived in Michigan as a child. You never get use to them, & they all come in various degrees & types of shaking; but you learn to become prepared & what to do. For us out here the key word is to be prepared & don't Panic; have plenty of supplies & have a plan in place for contacting family members. Other than that it is just a fact of life. The only difference is that you have Tornadoes with a warning system. We have pets that will tell you when bigger ones hit, as they go crazy & do really strange things to let you know something big is coming. But neither are very accurate, but animals are more sensitive & will let you know. I have been thru several & each experience it different.

We live in a trailer park and sometimes we get critters under our trailer. My husband wike me out of bed because our bed was shaking and our mirror doors on our closet were going crazy. He thought that we had a big critter under our trailer then we found out later that it was an earthquake.

I woke up thinking my cats were wrestling under the bed. Then I realized that not only was the bed shaking, but also the dresser. It almost sounded like distant thunder and lasted for probably 15 or 20 seconds. I went downstairs and asked my husband, who was getting ready for work, if he had felt anything. He said he had heard rattling, but thought maybe a big truck had just driven by. Then, our daughter, who sleeps upstairs in a bunk bed, told us that she had also awakened to her bed shaking. Later that morning (about 11:20 a.m.), our french doors began to rattle, along with the cabinets...and we realized we had just experienced an aftershock. Kind of eerie!

Seriously? It wasn't that powerful and didn't last that long. It felt like my dog was scratching his ears. And it lasted a matter of seconds, not minutes.

Posted by: Brian Location: Evansville, IN on Apr 18, 2008 at 01:39 PM
I'm in Evansville which is only about 40 miles from the epicenter. i had just fallen asleep after getting home from work. It was strong enough to knock stuff off my wal
