After Barack Obama took his bus tour from Washington High School, some others got to see him up close.

His overnight stop in South Bend obviously included a stop for some sleep, and of course a few meals.

Some of Obama's stops were planned and people knew he would be there. Other stops were a surprise.

His morning dose of vitamin C was shared unexpectedly with waitstaff and customers at a local diner, but there was nothing unexpected at the Marriott downtown.

Managers and employees had a lot of pre-planning to do for the presidential hopeful's visit.

Just after shifts changed at the Marriot, that's when the presidential hopeful checked into the presidential suite.

A manager we talked to says he missed out meeting Obama but, was just happy to be involved in the Senator's stay.

A few floors down, some other people were waiting, hoping to join Obama for a beverage.

David Dale, the bar manager at Sean O’Casey’s says, “We saw some of his staff and they looked like they were tired. Everybody was real excited. It was the topic of conversation.”

Obama and his entourage of 75 plus Secret Service agents took up the entire eighth and ninth floors.

Dale says, “This place was jammed with security.”

Dale was one of a select few able to go anywhere near Obama's room.

He says, “My expectation was it might be nice to get to take him up some coffee or whatever.”

Dale says unfortunately, he wasn't as lucky as those at the Sunrise Cafe. That's where Obama stopped in after he checked out of the Marriott.

Jill Hunt says, “It was exciting. He shook hands with everybody, introduced himself, and sat down and talked with people about what was going on. It was nice. We got autographs and pictures."

Obama sat at a booth with a laid off steelworker and a woman whose factory was moved to Mexico.

After he finished his orange juice and conversation, he paid for their bill and had another chat about the housing market.

Even after many conversations at Sunrise Cafe, Obama's day had only just begun.

He got back on his bus and headed to Gary, then Lafayette.
