Two men from Nappanee have been arrested for arson after a massive fire Saturday morning in downtown Nappanee.

The fire broke out at Graber's Carpet Studio and spread to John's Butcher Shop and the Nappanee Theater in downtown Nappanee. The stores are located in the 100-block of North Main Street, between East Walnut and Market Streets.

Firefighters say that the fire started around 6:45 a.m. Saturday morning in an apartment hallway on the second floor above Graber's Carpet Studio. One person had to be rescued from the apartments. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

The Nappanee Police Department immediately began following leads on information they received, and eventually made two arrests.

Joseph L. McCall and Gregory Kimbert Crafton, both 22 and from Nappanee, are in police custody on preliminary charges of Arson as a class A felony and Residential Entry as a class D felony.

Paperwork was submitted to the Elkhart County Prosecutor's office for a probable cause hearing on Sunday, January 20th.

Nappanee has already seen the support of a strong community—someone has even offered Graber a place to set up shop temporarily.

“It's devastating for the city of Nappanee to have to go through something like this,” says Elkhart County Emergency Mgmt. Director Jennifer Tobey.

Crews from eight departments, including the Nappanee, Bremen, Wakarusa, Foraker, New Paris, Plain Twp., Harrison Twp., and Milford fire departments were all called to the scene.

Firefighters worked throughout the day to put out the fire, and the cold, windy conditions make fighting fire an icy battle.

Firefighters actually had to destroy what was left of the building to make sure the fire was out. Neighboring businesses only had minor damage, thanks to a firewall between them.

Emma Hochstetler, who lived in one of the apartments, said the half dozen residents got out in a hurry.

“Everybody was running around to get out, and at least everybody got out of there safe. Kind of scary, but right now I’m OK, and I’m just glad to be out of there alive,” Hochstetler said.

Hochstetler says she didn't know how the blaze started, but noticed something suspicious as she ran out of the building.

“A gas can was on the bottom of the stairs, when you went down there it was burning on its side, and it was burning up the stairway, and I could see the flames coming up,” Hochstetler said.

She says she didn't know either of the men arrested.

“When I went down to the police station they found some prints, footprints that matched them, and they asked me a couple times if I’d ever seen that gas can, and I said nope, that's the first time I’d seen it,” Hochstetler said.

Sunday, Nappanee’s volunteer fire fighters continued to work - returning 3 times to put out hot spots in the building.

And after a solid day and a half of work, they're glad the arrests were made.

“It's wonderful, just the fact that they caught the guys,” said Fire Chief Tom Anglin. “I don’t know all the circumstances behind it, but I can assure the people that the community is safe.”

The community that has been so supportive through the tornado recovery, has shown the same to Hochstetler and the others put out by the blaze.

“As far as I know everybody does have a place to stay, and the Red Cross and Eagle's Wings, and I do know the Salvation Army was here yesterday, that was a tremendous help for us,” Anglin said.

Hochstetler is staying with a friend for the time being, and actually was already planning to leave town Monday - for a trip to Florida.

She's still leaving, and says by the time she gets back, she hopes to be in a new apartment.

When WNDU spoke to Mayor Larrry Thompson Sunday night, he said he was “disgusted” to hear that the fire may be arson, after all the community has been through the past few months.

But, he's also thankful they again avoided a situation that could have been much worse - since no one was seriously injured.

Anglin says there were 3 minor injuries as a result of the fire.

No one gives a crap about a polygraph test. They already admitted they were involved. Even if the other guy lit the match, they were both present and equally involved. They both the deserve the same punishment.

Posted by: unknown Location: nappanee on Feb 11, 2008 at 07:51 AM
Boy that is weird because polygraph test does not stand good in court.. So how is that???

Posted by: to: know one important Location: wakarusa on Feb 10, 2008 at 06:21 PM
ok. joe was not the one that started the fire. the other guy did. joe passed the polygraph saying that HE did not light the match and that he only dealt with the gas can. so, get your story straight you idiot.

It's funny how people are trying to make accuses for these guys. There's no doubt about it, they have mental issues. If they didn't realize how serious this matter was, obviously everything isn't all together upstairs.

What do you mean karma?! I am sorry but what did Victoria ever do to you to deserve what she got I am sorry but have you ever lost everything that you have had..aww she was mean to you in school go cry about it but she didn't deserve to get everything taken away from her!! You know what I wish that they would stay in jail for a very LONG time!! NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT HER SHE DIDN'T DESERVE THIS!!!! NO ONE DOES!!!!

now nobody is perfect but to set fire to a place where people live is completly stupid! a dont care what! everybody done something but a bet it didnt do this kind of damage or almost cost people their lives would some of you think differnt if someone would have died? besides the one guy just got out of westville prison not all that long ago (loser)convected arm robber now this lock him up and throw away the key

I'm appauled at what some of you are saying about these boys. I applaud the others that stick up for them. So, you who condem, can you honestly say that you yourself or a family member has never done anything "stupid"? Let me leave you with this thought. In the words of Jesus "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone." This comes from the Bible. John 8:7 Maybe you should read it.

Posted by: :] Location: wakarusa on Jan 25, 2008 at 03:23 PM
and another thing. i can bet half of you didn't even know these boys. so you look like idots judging them on one thing they did wrong.

Posted by: :] Location: Wakarusa on Jan 25, 2008 at 01:37 PM
to be completely honest. i think all of you need to get your heads out of your butts. god didn't create us to judge other people on the mistakes they make. everyone makes mistakes, NOT ONE OF US IS PERFECT. yes it was bad judgement on these boy's parts. . but your no better then them ratteling off on about what you think should happen to them. . its not up to us . . its in the hands of the judge now. i just think it'd be great if you would look at all the bad things you have done in your life and stop judging them. i believe that they'll get what they deserve. but all of you running your mouth about things .. makes you just as bad as them.

if u r not a mother, father, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, grandma or grandpa, then please try 2 imagine being 1 --just 4 a few minutes. how would u feel 2 read or hear those comments about someone u used 2 rock 2 sleep & cuddle with.A little baby that was so cute & loveable, just starting his life.in this christian town, there r more God fearing, praying individuals than not. Lets band together & direct some of our prayers for the few that r spreading rumors, pointing fingers, & passing judgement. I was taught that there is 1 Being that knows all--He knows how this all transpired from beginning to end. He knows who was involved and who was not; but most of all, He knows each and every person that is judging these boys. Joe has been very honest & straight forward from what i have been told. He has admitted it--he has said that there was nobody else involved or that even knew they were going to do it. He has admitted that he needs help.Lets pray 4 both of these boys too

I agree with Little Lilly!!! Karma does suck....and victoria has been nothing but cruel to me and my friends all through school. so she had this one coming. to be quite honest. in my opinion.

Posted by: Little Lilly Location: Portage on Jan 24, 2008 at 01:38 PM
What a vicious, and spiteful comment. Karma is a ******* Maybe that's why your apartment burnt down. I wished no harm on anyone! I think you need to pray more for God to release you from YOUR issues!!

Posted by: this is for victoria Location: nappanee on Jan 24, 2008 at 12:22 PM
lets just say wat comes around goes around, and i mean that towards you, not them

Posted by: Little Lilly Location: Portage on Jan 23, 2008 at 07:12 PM
And... I of course didn't think ANY of this was funny...I merely ment that I don't believe either of the boys know how serious this was! I don't believe that this fire was set with intent to harm anyone! It was a STIPID MISTAKE!! One that comes with consequences! I suppose some people cannot help but resentful! Be THANKFUL that NO ONE WAS HURT!! Praise God!

Posted by: Little Lilly Location: Portage on Jan 23, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Do what we all must do Victoria, Leave it up to God! I ment no offense

Posted by: Glenn Location: Nappanee on Jan 23, 2008 at 03:10 PM
Sadly, there's a fine line between maliciousness and being just too plain stupid to calculate the consequences of your actions farther out than say, 30 seconds. I think this is the fence you people are volleying your comments over. Personal responsiblity gets my vote though. Oh, one more question: Woodview does teach grammar, right? Yes? KThnxBye.

Posted by: Victoria Location: nappanee on Jan 23, 2008 at 02:31 PM
well, i used to be a resident of nappanee...until my apartment was set on fire! how dare you "little lilly" say that it was a stupid joke? are you serious? what the heck is your problem? bar fights & fights in general are no joke. tossing a gas can and a match with the intent of starting a fire is not a joke.

Posted by: Little Lilly Location: Portage on Jan 23, 2008 at 12:31 PM
First I'd like to say Gods Speed! to the town of Nappanee. My Prayers go out to all involved! They include Joe and his Buddy. Judge NOT, least ye be Judged! Shame on you Maria! You must be over 50. Why are there peeps saying that they tried to kill someone?! You see.....I'm sure it was more like ------!! A STUPID joke gone bad, but a joke none the less. Maybe something they saw on TV? I believe that justice will prevail....and as for all you Judgemental people, who have nothing to do but feed off of negetivity, there will be many tears in the future for you all as well. Negetivity LOVES Negetivity! I feel for all the families! May God be with you all!

ok i know joe really well and as the rest of my family said he has a 5year old daughter so shut up. he was not the only one that did it. and either way do you really think he and greig were the only ones that did it? doubt it. so the nappanee police need to get of their fat butts and find the other ones who put them up to it!! i understand wat he did was wrong but guess wat he turned himself in! no one else had the ---- to do that so just stop he is paying his debt and this is coming from a long life of hell, so dont judge him! you dont know where he came from or where he has been. i know wat it is like to grow up without a father and now his child does to so just stop!

Posted by: nappanee resident Location: nappanee on Jan 23, 2008 at 11:39 AM
I know the comments get old...it isn't the parents fault, these guys are adults, it has nothing to do with their parents...but yes, they need to pay hard for what they did...and the everyone needs to stop thinking they know everything "inside" that happened, unless you did it or had something to do with it, YOU don't know. I have faith that justice will be served to those who commited the crime and those who were involved. Just let the police and investigators do their job, and everyone stop running your mouths and spreading rumors.

It is very sad that he has a daughter who will grow up without her dad but he obviosly wasnt too worried about taking care of her or hed of been at home with her. What if one day his daughter is that person some 22 yr old kid is trying to kill? They deserve to be locked up for a long long time. Quit knocking the police and fire dept until you do their job and put your life on the line for idiotic kids you have no room to talk.
