It was a season to forget for the Notre Dame football team and its fans.

For the first time in school, the Irish lost 9 games in a season.

Notre Dame President Emeritus, Father Theodore Hesburgh, has seen it all. From National championships to 2-win seasons, Father Ted knows what winning and losing at Notre Dame is all about.

"What people sometimes forget is that we've had seasons in the past that have had eight losses and two wins," Father Hesburgh explains. "I was part of some of those seasons and I didnt enjoy them."

"But I don't think football is like eternal salvation. It's a sport, it's a diverting thing in our lives. I think we ought to do it as well as we can. We ought to do everything we do in life, whether it's marriage, education or business, as well as we can."

Hesburgh says while he certainly follows every football season, he doesn't worry about the program.

"We're going to have ups and downs," he says. "That's part of the game. But it's not a matter of life and death."

"I suffer through bad seasons like everybody else does, but I also enjoy good seasons and we've had our share of those."

"We've won more National Championships that any university in the land, so we're not in a position to complain if once in a while we have a bad season."

For more on the President Emeritus' thoughts on other aspects of Notre Dame and the world, be sure to join Maureen McFadden for "Conversations with Father Hesburgh."

The feature airs Monday nights at 11 on Newscenter 16, beginning January 7th.

Where did I ever say that you are not allowed to? I just said that I dont understand it. Re-read the posts, Class of 97.

How do you know my gender? You are as anonymous as can be.... I have no idea which way you swing. Not the point. The point is according to your (twisted) rules, I am apparently allowed to be a fan. Whew! I will sleep better at night knowing I have your approval on who I can and can't root for.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 7, 2008 at 10:46 AM
"Sweet pea"? I dont swing that way, Domer. I see how things there work now...

Posted by: ND Fan Location: ND on Jan 7, 2008 at 09:35 AM
Anon: ND class of 97, sweet pea. I also rooted for teams in the bowls, am I not allowed? That's crazy talk. WE ARE ND. Should we tell all the fans in the stadium that if they are not alumni they have to refrain from that particular cheer? Oh, we should tell them that they can't sway to the alma mater unless they are alum either, right?

I am still laughing at your posts. I didn't post the first two. My first post was; "We are ND...." I can see how you would think so though. I wouldnt be so crass.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings. If you took the time to read your posts on this thread you would see that in your first post you insulted ND and thier fans. You also did that in your 2nd post. So, you come in here and fire away at Notre Dame and then someone makes a joke and you get all girlie about it. Must not have been too played out of a joke if it bothers you that much. And like I said prove you went to IU, you asked me to do the same. What a clown you make invisible arguments about nothing. You make insults based on your hte of Notre Dame. I bet you are a big IU Basketball fan, right. Atleast our coach does not break NCAA rules. Dumb is insulting people and not expecting a return and or being offended when you get one. Relax, your slip is showing.

I love that you attack my "lack of taste" and tell me to post on topic right after you post an old lame joke. I laughed out loud at your last post. Typical Notre Dame fan...Dumb

Oh wise one, I could care less about if you belive me or not, you don't have the intellect to hold a real debate about anything. If you went to IU, which I really doubt, you should try to show more pride in your education. You will never know what my connection to ND is, you would call me liar no matter what I say. Have pride in your school, great, fine, but please if you want to post try to show a real topic, other than trying to be insultful. Most of the IU fans and Alum I know would find your lack of taste very disturbing.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 6, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Rabid, thats an old played out joke from an old played out fan. "I have a connection to ND"~ yeah right. At least I said what my "connection" was. THAT is why I dont believe you...

Anon, here is a joke for you... A Notre Dame Fan is in the restroom at ND Stadium, he finishes up and begins to exit the restroom. Just then an IU Fan walks in and says "At Indiana University they teach us to wash our hands after we use the bathroom." The Notre Dame Fan looks at him and says "Thats real nice, at Notre Dame they teach us not to whiz on our hands." I lost all respect for IU after they fired Bob Knight.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 4, 2008 at 02:44 PM
No, with pro ball, it's different. I just dont understand it in the college scene.

Posted by: Rabid Irish Fan Location: Standing Tall on Jan 4, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Prove you went to IU, you can't, this is a comment board. If I say yes, I went to ND you will call us liars, if not then we are bandwagoners. What a joke. I have a connection to Notre Dame same as you to IU. Thats a hater for you, tries to make rules to determine who ND fans are allowed to be. Why don't you show us your IU degree at work and post a real comment not some little girl banter you toss around, grow up junior. BTW, I may go to hell for it but I love the Irish enough that I had a Ted Drake inspired tattoo placed on my arm. Anyone know how many Hail Mary's you have to give for a tat?? Slade, light one for me too incase you make it back before I do. I would have last night when I was there but it was too cold.

To Anonymous...so you think ND fans cannot be a ND fan because they didn't go to ND. I guess I can't be a Colts fan because I didn't play for the Colts, or the Bears for that matter. I guess high school would be the same in your opinion. Sorry, but I cheered for the Central Bears when they played for the basketball state championship. John Coleman, Slyvester Coleman, Lee McNight, Herbie Lee and Michael Bishop was their starters and I went to another high school back then. This past bowl season I cheered for Michigan, WVA, VA Tech. I cheered for Purdue and C. Michigan at the same time, because I like both schools. I will also cheer for OSU over LSU. I cheered for these schools just as much as I would have cheered for ND if they would have played. P.S. "God, will you forgive me for cheering for Michigan? I'll light a candle at the grotto my next visit, My Bad!"

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 4, 2008 at 01:05 PM
IU, and I fully support their programs. But, at least I have some real connection with them. Im not a bandwagoner the way people like you are!

Anon, is that all you have? Where did you attend College? Oh, your still in High School, IC.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 4, 2008 at 11:33 AM
"We are ND" Did you go there? Doubtful....

Posted by: ND Fan Location: ND on Jan 4, 2008 at 09:05 AM
Slade- I did not hear/see the interview but I have come to realize that haters pretty much blame ND for all that is bad in the world... I tolerate that because we have thick skins and are proud of our team. Let the haters hate, it will not dampen our spirit or our love for ND. WE ARE ND. A lot of haters like to thrive on random false comments and treat them as gospel. I enjoy the banter with them- it is like having a conversation with an over-imaginative child. If that football player sleeps better at night blaming the Irish, so be it.

To you ND lovers. What did you think about the anti-ND comment made during the haft-time at the Oklahome/WVA game? They interviewed the 1951 undefeated team from San Francisco Dons. Altough undefeated they were not chosen to play in any bowl games because they had two black players. One of the players interviewed, it seem to me he blamed Notre Dame. What would make him think back in 1951 Notre Dame had any thing to do with that decision. The bowl games back then were all in the South not the North. Also, back in the fifties, blacks could not even go to Southern schools. It was the bowl decision not to let them attend, not Notre Dame. You ND haters probably loved it when he used ND as an example. Yes, ND Fan...the ND haters will crawl out of the woodwork to beat a dead horse. This ex-San Francisco player has held a grudge against ND since 1951 and finally got his say.

Despite a 3-9 season, the student section of Notre Dame Stadium was not only full, but full through the END of EVERY home game until the Alma Mater was sung. So Roy, buddy, your thought process on the heart of the student body is about as solid as your typing skills. But thanks for playing our game. ND hater, Charlie was here last year and the year before that also, so what were you posting then? Or do you only crawl out of the woodwork to beat an already dead horse?

Lynn, come on get a clue. Does ND make all of the preseason rankings?, NO. Does ND put themselves into bowl games that they probably should not have gotten, NO. Complain to the voters and pollers who put them in those spots.

New England Patriots---Best Season Ever!! Notre Lame---Worst Season Ever!!! Coincidence....I Think not!!!! LOL

"Haters hold the Irish to a different standard than anyone else." Hello, the Irish think they are above all and should be held to a different standard. They do it to themselves- overrated!

You guys are all dorks! Ripping on somone's spelling on a website blog. LOOOOSERS! You must be ND fans! Don't have anything smart to say, but just gotta say something! Now, THATS funny.

Posted by: Slade Location: Mishawaka on Dec 27, 2007 at 04:15 PM
Come on guys...give Roy a break. He just can't type!!!

Posted by: Mike Location: SBIN on Dec 27, 2007 at 02:44 PM
Anonymous, you are too hard on Roy. He actually did mean "collage" football, which is played by collecting various magazines articles, construction paper and other mixed media. It's played a lot in his home state of Michigan, apparently.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 27, 2007 at 01:50 PM
Good God Roy!!!! You MUST be a Michigan grad. You can't even spell "college" correctly! I spelled your school correctly, is it too much to ask to spell ours correctly? Ha ha, I guess so. With that much intelligence, your argument MUST be valid! I bet your name is really Rob and you just misspelled that as well. LMAO! THAT'S funny! I don't care who you are!!

Loser coach, loser school, loser football team.

Posted by: Joe Location: Indianapolis on Dec 26, 2007 at 07:54 PM
Right on!

Posted by: Roy Location: south bend on Dec 26, 2007 at 06:22 PM
Yeah right... a win is a win huh chuck.Keep in mind that the first game notre dame played was against Michigan...and they lost...also if any of you ra-ra wizards know any history other than what someone else has told you @ the Linebacker you would know that when the S.O.T holy cross began..it was in Michigan..we have had good seasons ( Michigan) and bad.... but we do not replace our coach when we do.Noter Dame has lost the respect of all who enjoy collage football for what ever reason,Boo Who !!! move on with your lives..dont blame the coach...it is in the heart of the student body.they are the ones who have failed over the years........hang your heads low...........as you should

Posted by: Harry Location: Goshen on Dec 26, 2007 at 05:03 PM
Hmm... doesn't seem the powers that be were so understanding with the last coach who didn't have near as bad of a record. I thought the mantra from the alumni was that they had to be in playoff contention EVERY year. I appreciate Father Hesburgh's point about doing your best no matter whether it be sports or other areas of life. But ND is compromised already in its addiction to the almighty $$$, and losing teams don't sellout hotel rooms, dining tables, team apparell, and TV coverage. We'll see what the tone is after the first five losses next year.

Posted by: Rabid Irish Fan Location: Standing Tall on Dec 26, 2007 at 04:47 PM
Yeah, 20 years. You mean 20 years since we have won a National Championship? So I guess you are saying that if you dont win it all every year you dont have a good team, just like a hater. Haters hold the Irish to a different standard than anyone else.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 26, 2007 at 03:09 PM
ND sucks! They haven't had a good team in 20 years, but don't tell them that, cause they still can't figure it out.

Posted by: Mr. Humble Location: Notre Dame World on Dec 26, 2007 at 11:43 AM
"We've won more National Championships that any university in the land, so we're not in a position to complain if once in a while we have a bad season." Ah, yes, still as humble as ever. When we win, we are still as obnoxious as ever.
