Many of us will be running around this weekend trying to finish up—or in some cases start—our Christmas shopping.

So it is a good time to be reminded of what Christmas is all about and today at Notre Dame there was clear picture.

It was a Who's who of the Holy Cross order signing books Friday at Notre Dame's Hammes Bookstore.

Notre Dame president, Father John Jenkins, and former presidents, Fathers Theodore Hesburgh and Edward Monk Malloy were among members of the Holy Cross order who contributed to a book of daily reflections..

Put together to honor Father Basil Moreau, who started the Holy Cross order after the French Revolution.

“His vision of course was to found a new community and work with the poor and education mainly,” said Father Hesburgh.

The Holy Cross order flourishes on four continents, including Notre Dame.

Entitled, The Cross, Our Only Hope, Father Malloy explains the significance of the title to Father Moreau—“Our founder had many trials and tests during this lifetime and he tried to translate those into a hopeful fashion.”

The book was put together by two seminarians who wanted to honor the Holy Cross order and to recognize the beatification this year of Fr. Moreau.

Says Kevin Grove C.S.C., the book’s editor, “The central truth of the Holy Cross tradition is that the cross is our only hope and so these are two hundred priests and brothers from around the world who have lived and worked their vows by struggling and working toward that truth.”

A truth still present for Notre Dame president Father John Jenkins.

“One of my favorite quotes of Father Moreau,” says Jenkins, “is ‘education is the art of bringing your people to completeness’ and I hope that's what we do today. I think it is.”

A gift to honor Father Moreau and a perfect gift at Christmas. The Cross, Our Only Hope is available at most book stores.

And Father Jenkins will be at the Notre Dame Bookstore again Saturday, reading Christmas stories to kids at 11 am.
