You just changed your clocks this weekend, but in St. Joseph County, leaders are thinking about making a bigger switch: to the central time zone.

As you probably know, this has been an issue in the past.

In 2005, the Indiana legislature asked federal officials to look at whether some counties should move from the eastern to the central time zone.

In 2006, the Department of Transportation determined some counties should switch, but not St. Joseph county.

Now, two St. Joseph County Commissioners are trying to convince the DOT they need the change.

It would still be a long time before it happened--the county missed the deadline to petition for the change, so they are asking for an extension.

But they say they have got a petition ready to go if they're allowed to submit it, and a group of businesses to stand behind it.

Some people wish the issue would just stay in the past.

But now, some St. Joe County Commissioners want to talk about the time again.

“Economically it's very clear that St. Joseph county needs to be identified with the economic center of Chicago,” said Commissioner Steve Ross, who along with Commissioner Bob Kovach, sent the letter to the DOT.

Ross says St. Joseph County can thrive as a center for interstate business, by utilizing major byways like the Indiana Toll Road, but says the eastern time zone is a stumbling block.

WNDU talked to about a half dozen shipping companies that agree, but we also talked to Towne Air Freight.

“We've had a lot of different business owners trying to lobby us to their cause, but I don't want to change it,” said Tom Downey, President and CEO of Towne Air Freight.

Even thought they were for the switch 2 years ago.

“Our biggest operation is Chicago, and it would have been great to be in the same time zone as Chicago, but that didn't work… We found a way to adjust, and actually we like it better,” Downey said.

Of course, the issue will, again, bring out some opinions.

“The time difference is a real hassle, I feel we're closer to Chicago,” said Scott Miller, who lives in La Porte County, but works in South Bend, forcing him to deal with the time zone issue every day.

“I'm fine with eastern time. If they push it through to central time, whatever it ends up being people are just going to have to cope,” said Chris Taylor of Mishawaka.

“All I ask is the legislature make a choice, one or the other, and leave it. Either, don't change the clock, change the clock to central, eastern. Make a choice and leave it,” said Bob Walls of South Bend.

Commissioners Ross and Kovach are asking for the extension, while Commissioner Dobson says the other two haven't even consulted him on the matter.

No word yet from the DOT whether they will let the late petition go through.

Even local leaders cannot agree on how to approach the issue.

“The economic viability becomes a prominent issue, and I think that we are prepared to present the best interests of St. Joseph County,” Ross said.

“Our apologies to the community for opening an wound, it should have been done at a later time when we could have been able to critically evaluate this stuff,” Dobson said.

“I think it's an issue that should be dealt with statewide, not at the county level,” said South Bend Mayor Steve Luecke, when asked about the issue.

Luecke also says there are more important issues to address right now, while Ross says he considers this an important issue for the area’s economy.

“There's always other things at hand, this is just one of many issues…Is the general economy of St. Joe County less important than our budget, is it less important than property taxes?,” Ross said.

The DOT looks mainly at commercial issues: traffic patterns, etc; when deciding whether a change is needed.

But many people - including the St Joseph County Chamber of Commerce - say the matter was decided on so recently, it may be too early to bring it back up again - since not much has changed.

The chamber of commerce did a survey of businesses when this issue came up a few years ago, and say it was about a 50-50 split on which time zone would be easier for their operations.

They do not think much has changed since then, but may do another survey if this continues to be an issue.

They also say 91% of those surveyed said they preferred to stay in the same time zone as Elkhart County. Ross says he doesn’t buy into that argument, comparing it “the tail wagging the dog.”

“I think that if we went to central time, you'd see Marshall county going to central time, you'd see a whole corridor wanting to go to central time,” Ross said.

I really do not understand all the hype revolving around this time zone situation. I do know that I do not like the fact that my child has to walk to the bus stop in the dark at 7 in the morning, then after school she goes to the boys and girls club, because I work, and she has to walk home in the dark at 5:30 in the evening, I pray everyday she stays safe, you know because of all of the child molesters out there, 37 that I know of God only knows how many are out there that we don't know of. To me this time zone issue is not just stupid it is criminal putting children in harms way. I think the proper "legal term" is child endangerment! the politians need to get their heads out of their you know whats and start using that thing called a brain!

Put all 92 counties on the same time zone. Period. Nobody gets a choice on the decision made in Indianapolis. Live with it. If the powers that be in Indy are not smart enough to figure this out and say this is the way it is going to be..... then please move to Michigan and run for a State Office there..... please!!

Thank you Mitch for moving us in to the 21th century. Yes us Indiana folks are as smart as the rest of the country. Pay no attention to our stupid Councilmen, we'll take care of them next election. Golfers and little leaguer are very greatfull. More daylight to spend enjoying our lives, spending time with our family and friends. Thanks for the money from that dinosaur toll road. Thanks for fixing the state budjet. Please help our locale leaders, they seem to be clueless about how to fix our problems.

stop screwing with it already!!

It is not an issue of Elkhart moving jobs here..What I mean is several companies in St Joseph county also operate out of Elkhart county. I do a lot of business out of Wisconsin and the hour difference is not a big deal...a lot better then California. We will never have it the way it used to be so lets just stay where we are. Let the voters decide instead of two out of line council men who did not consult the full council to begin with...also...Mitch cannot change our time zone..only the federal dot.

It was great before Mitch forced us into adopting DLS. I think this topic needs to be brought back up again and again and again until we get back to what worked before - and that was not observing DLS.

I think we should "let sleeping dogs lie" about the time issue. The area has adjusted to the time change very well. We are to close to Southwestern Michigan to not be on the same time. Chicago is way to far for South Bend involved in there time zone. PLEASE LEAVE THIS ALONE AND DO NOT MAKE IT A STATE ISSUE AGAIN. The state has more pressing isues to work on than a time issure once again.

Ross and Kovatch need to worry more about finding $$$$$$$$ to give workers a well deserved pay raise

Posted by: Harry Location: South Bend on Nov 8, 2007 at 04:47 PM
Pardon the pun but, what a waste of time. I'm not too sure what a county commissioner's job is, but I'm sure that there are more pressing issues that they should be focusing on. To all of the commissioners: You were elected to serve the citizens of this community. Stop - I repeat - stop diddling around and get something positive done while your in office.

LET'S NOT DROP THIS ISSUE. THIS ISSUE AFFECTS US ALL SO WE SHOULD 'ALL' HAVE A SAY IN IT UNLIKE BEFORE. LET'S NOT JUST LET THE PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN AND ELKHART DECIDE WHAT WE SHOULD DO. YOU GO ROSS AND KOVATCH! YOU HAVE MY VOTE!

Do not posted multiple comments from different names. Anyone who spams the board like this will have all of their comments removed. Thank you. -WNDU.com

Give me a break. Leaved the time the way it is. Steve Ross and Kovatch need to find something important to get people fired up about besides the time change. One would think that Mr. Ross is only thinking about HIS business, not anyone elses. Why in the world don't these two men get busy and jump on board to work out the property tax problems around here. This should be upmost in their minds and on their agenda especially when we all heard from Mr. Ross about the amount he has to pay by Nov. 13th.PLEASE GET ON WITH WHAT IS IMPORTANT AND NOT FOOL WITH THE TIME.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: mishawaka on Nov 8, 2007 at 02:35 PM
leave it alone!! It was not broken the first time around. Why change it again!! We have too many other things to worry about. health Ins., property tax. Do we need to say more. Leave the time alone!!

Posted by: greg on Nov 8, 2007 at 02:30 PM
Hey get real... Why don't you just move somewhere that is on Central time? Then we will both be happy.

Posted by: JAY Location: SOUTH BEND on Nov 8, 2007 at 02:16 PM
IN MY OPINION WE SHOULD LEAVE THIS ISSUE AS SETTLED, I AM SURE THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES OUR COMMISSIONERS SHOULD BE SPENDING THEIR TIME ON. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS SUBJECT IS THAT WE ARE ON A STEADY TIME WITH SOMEONE, NOT HALF ONE PART OF THE YEAR AND HALF THE OTHER PART OF THE YEAR. WHO IT IS IS NOT EXCEPTIONALLY IMPORTANT. IN THIS AGE OF BUSINESS, WE CAN ADAPT TO WHATEVER TIME ZONE WE ARE ON. THE DECISION WAS JUST RECENTLY MADE, STICK WITH IT. MOVE ON TO OTHER AGENDAS.

Hey Dingleberry seed. I wonder where your IQ falls on the chart. Probably somewhere between a door knob and a box of rocks. Can't help but wonder about you posters that have for now gotten your way wanting to "move on". Where was this spirit of moving on when DST got defeated time and time again in the House only to be resurrected by Mitch and his cronies and forced down our throats?

A chimp has more brains than Ross and is better looking too.

OH PLEASE!! Can't we just move on??!! There are people all over the world who don't know where their next meal is coming from and we are still griping about this issue??!! We in Indiana and the US are just too spoiled! I don't see the big deal in changing our clocks two times a year. Besides, I LOVE the extra daylight in the evening. Who wants it to be dark at 4:30 pm in the winter months if we go on Central time? NOT ME!! MOVE ON to more important issues!!!

Posted by: John Location: New Carlisle on Nov 8, 2007 at 12:08 PM
I attended the timezone hearing at IUSB in 2005. Elkhart County really did not make any good arguement for staying in eastern time when Mike Yoder stated that we (Elkhart) cannot support the move because of our ties to Michigan, UNLESS the entire state would move to central. So Mike you can sell out Michigan if Indy picks central time? Talk about passing the buck!! I really wonder what the true reason behind Mike's position, espeacially when in 2005 Monaco Coach lobbied for central time?? could it be that Jayco, the Yoder family business has a majority of its employees living in Michigan and is seeking an advantage over the competition? Can anyone really deny the fact that we would be creating increased ceconomic opportunities by joining the greater Chicagoland area?

Posted by: Standard time Location: north liberty on Nov 8, 2007 at 11:49 AM
PS. I believe that Marshall county has petitioned to go to central time already- ????

Posted by: Standard time Location: north liberty on Nov 8, 2007 at 11:44 AM
Thats whay we need to be on standard time. If we can't be on standard time then Central time is where St. Joe County needs to be. Thats what Mitch campagined for and thats what it should be , instead he fell short of us and sided with Elkhart. Pick a time and stay on it, no spring forward or fall back that is what is a real pain. Now we are on this time for 4 months ??? Does that really make sense Go for the time Change !

Posted by: agrivated Location: elkhart on Nov 8, 2007 at 10:56 AM
whatever.. battle with time difference in relation to Chicago.. or Elkhart.. either way there is a battle.. so leave it alone. There will never be a way to make everyone happy.I know just the mention of this makes me unhappy. So, the poor people in Laporte who work in S.B. have an issue now.. what about those of us that live in S.B and work in Elkhart?? laso. then

Posted by: Mike Location: Mishawauka on Nov 8, 2007 at 10:34 AM
It just galls me to think of our poloticians to be flip flopping around on the time issue AGAIN. For petes sake just let it alone and have them focus on more important issues. I saw a great bumper sticker once. It read "Of course you can trust local government" I catagorize tnem (polticians) car salesmen and insurance salesmen in the same catagory. Have you ever heard of people say there goal in life is to be a politician, car salesman, or insurance salesman?????

Posted by: Greg Location: South Bend on Nov 8, 2007 at 09:38 AM
Adjust...deal with it. There are way more important issues to focus on than this... You are beating a dead horse. Use your brain and adjust, it is not that difficult.

Posted by: Mike Location: South Bend on Nov 8, 2007 at 08:45 AM
Our Commissioners have a combined IQ of a rock. These guys are the real deal, complete idiots who so far have screwed up the counties budget and managed to almost cripple the Police Department not to mention kicking everyones spouses off their insurance. Ross is the king butthead himself. This guy could screw up a good dream. All they are are clowns in the circus. They are on the same level as the Roseland show. Until they are out of office or done acting like a bunch of 2 year olds this county will continue to go down hill. I can't wait till the next election. It can't come soon enough. In the time you clowns are still here why don't you try using those things you have between your ears and stop fulfilling your personal agenda's. Leave the time where it's at, we are used to it. There are plenty of other things you need to do like stop screwing the counties employees and fix the property tax issue. What another joke to talk about.

So tonight at 5:00pm when it get's dark think about it. If we were on Central Time. It would be 4:00pm. Right now we are on the time we always have been on. So what if our Summer days are longer. Do we really want shorter days in the Winter?

Posted by: Jim Location: South Bend on Nov 8, 2007 at 08:21 AM
I will also say that I think being in central time might make it more attractive for Chicago business to look at our market as far as retail/restaurants/whatever, creating more jobs. I don't think Elkhart is looking to move businesses over here. And as Bryan said, if you don't like us being in central time and you in eastern, then move here.

Posted by: Jim Location: South Bend on Nov 8, 2007 at 08:18 AM
Obviously, it would have been a lot better if Mitch had just left well enough alone. Unfortunately that gas bag has his own agenda and not the interests of the state at heart. I think that we do have more economic ties to Chicago and as far as Elkhart goes, well that's just too bad. St. Joe County should not base it's decision on Elkhart, we should base it on what we want. That said, I agree with the gentleman in the article. Pick a time and stay with it. If it's eastern, so be it. It's not the best choice in my opinion but at least it's a choice and we can adjust.

Posted by: Todd Location: Mishawaka on Nov 8, 2007 at 07:58 AM
I see that most everybody on this post agrees to let it alone. Move to Chicago if you want their time. Better yet, get the support of the full counsel instead of doing the behind the door buddy system. Michigan is just miles away...we need to be with them and Elkhart county. Bad form.

Posted by: Chad Location: Osceola on Nov 8, 2007 at 07:41 AM
With the budget way out of control it would figure who the commissioners are that want to waste tax money on time zones. Maybe you shouldn't waste time, money and figure out how to get finances, property taxes, and the thousands of other things under control before you waste time on our time zone! Mr. Ross pay your overinflated Taxes so that you can spend the money how you want but don't spend mine unless its for something positive. Mr Kovach your political Resume is only impressive to yourself. I remember Mishawaka didn't want you and unfortunately St, Joe County inherited you. I dont mean to offend but I challenge you to show some accountability and fix the problems at hand!

Central Time makes so much more sense -- And as the article stated the other following counties would follow suit. Michigan was always different from us in the past the way the old system was , so they can readapt again. Our counties economics is more important than individual's time schedule.

Posted by: Steve Location: Granger on Nov 8, 2007 at 07:04 AM
If the commissioners are so convinced that we should be on Central time, they should be lobbying our neighboring counties to join the petition. It is absolute arrogance to suggest that we make the move and it will force the neighboring counties to make the move. The possible economic gain of alignment with Chicago is countered by the hardship created for families that would live and work in different time zones. While the poster from LaPorte has my sympathy, I seem to recall that a study of daily traffic flow north, south and east compared to west was around 12 to 1.

Since I live in MI and work in IN, I like the time as it is now :) Please don't even think about changing it back

What time is it? All this time B.S. confuses me. Chicago can kiss our butts. We do more of our business in Michigan....gawww.

Posted by: Mark Location: Elkhart on Nov 7, 2007 at 09:43 PM
Wow, this is really a stupid idea. While chicago may be our industrial neighbor, just think about people living in Michigan. This would be a huge headache to them. I go to a school in St. Joe County and if there was this time shift, that would just wreck havoc on my schedule more than it already is. I hope to god that they dont change it.
