We are just one day away from the 2010 season opener for Notre Dame's football team.
Saturday afternoon, nearly 90,000 people will converge on campus, either tailgating or watching the game -- so, where do you go to get around more easily?
PARKING & TRANSPORTATION
If you're coming from the Notre Dame exit off of the Indiana Toll Road, White Field is probably your best and quickest option. You can continue across S.R. 933 and follow the markers onto the field.
There will be shuttle buses going from White Field to Library Circle -- parking for that is $20
Keep in mind that Juniper road between Douglas and Angela will be closed.
Parking on the Notre Dame Golf Course -- formerly the Burke Memorial Golf Course -- will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. It's requested that you do not approach lots south of Douglas Road without a reserved parking pass.
Motorists coming from U.S. 31 are urged to follow the U.S. 31 bypass to Brick/Cleveland Road, drive east on Cleveland to Juniper and then south to general admission parking.
For those of you who don't mind walking but might need to get somewhere quickly on campus -- there is something new this year called pedal cabs.
"The student groups are going to be operating the pedal cabs. They're going to be taking everybody around campus for a $10/one way donation, is the fee for the service, and all the money goes right to the student group,” said director of Game Day Operations Mike Seamon. "Hopefully it's well received by the public and if it is, we'll continue to build that program in the future."
The student group that operates those pedal cabs rotates with every game, giving them an opportunity to do some fundraising.
If you plan on tailgating, parking lots will be closed 3 hours after the game is done. To get more detailed game day parking information, click on the Big Red Bar.
THE COST OF GAME DAY
So what does it cost to go to a Notre Dame game? It can vary, but the average couple can spend about $1500 for the weekend, including two nights in a hotel, food, gas, tickets and parking.
To stay at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City this weekend, it will cost you $256.
A night at Four Seasons in Beverly Hills will set you back $395. In South Bend, hotel rooms are going for $540 a night, and there’s normally a 2-night minimum.
The new Fairfield Inn and Suites right across from campus has sold out all 119 of its rooms for both the Purdue and Michigan games. What's more, the rooms sold out before the hotel even opened back in June.
"They're pretty loyal fans it seems like,” said Darrell Edens from Fairfield Inn and Suites. “I guess with location, being right across the street; you don't have to pay for parking, free continental breakfast...It's amazing that we sold out before we opened."
The $540 a night price tag includes a suite with 2 queen beds and 2 flat screen TVs. Each guest also gets free parking, wireless internet and breakfast included with their stay; however it doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to go to a game, there are also a lot of deals.
"You can get on with a $14 dollar pizza for two people -- easily $14-15 dollars... How is it? It's good!” said Warren Verteramo of Rocco’s Pizza.
PLANNING YOUR GAME DAY
Whether you’re here from out of town or a local, if you want to plan out your Notre Dame experience, the university's Game Day website can help. We have a link to that on the Big Red Bar. If on game day you have questions you can text the word “IRISH” to 69050 for assistance.
PRE-GAME FESTIVITIES
The famous Notre Dame tunnel is just one of many things football fans can see and do Friday on campus and the best part is it’s free. Allowing fans down to the field is something that started last season and has been a huge success.
If you'd like to head down the tunnel and right up to the field to take photos you can from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; however the tunnel will be closed whenever the visiting team decides to do a walk through.
A little later on Friday from 4-6 p.m. by the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center is the Irish Green with a lot of stuff to do for the kids and live music.
If you want to go to the pep rally with Coach Brian Kelly and the entire team that's located on the South Quad in front of Dillon Hall from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday night.
No matter what you're in the mood for, you won't be bored around campus.
“So many of the things that we a huge success last year, we're going to carry over this year,” said Seamon. “Parking on the Burke Golf Course for the public is still going to be open, open at 8 a.m. on game day Saturdays for $40. People can tailgate and it's a close walk to the stadium.”
The block party at Eddy Street Commons starts after the pep rally around 7 or 7:30 p.m. and there is also a party in downtown South Bend. Gates open for that at 5 p.m.
