A plot of land in western Indiana that's tainted with petroleum will be transferred to the city of Terre Haute for a planned cleanup.
The Tribune-Star reports that the Vigo County commissioners voted Tuesday to assign a certified property lien for the two-acre plot to Terre Haute's Board of Public Works and Safety.
The property on the edge of Indiana State University's campus was once owned by Toney Petroleum Inc., and contains an existing building that holds four 250,000-gallon tanks. City planner Pat Martin says the city has cleaned out the tanks, but the site remains an environmental problem.
A recent study of the site found soil and water contamination.
The city condemned the site in 2007 and has spent about $40,000 to date on cleanup efforts.
