After going missing in action 41 years ago, a Knox soldier finally came home Monday.

George Andrew Howes was serving in the Vietnam War when his helicopter crashed, killing Howes and his three crew members. He was declared MIA after the crash, but his remains were recently identified using DNA testing.

Monday’s warm welcome was far different from the one most Vietnam War veterans received.

“Back in the 1970s before the war ended, people never gave us much respect at all,” said veteran and Andy’s classmate Timothy Shepherd.

But Monday night in Knox, residents showed the utmost respect for their fallen hometown hero. Hundreds of people lined the streets, displaying American flags, signs and even tears.

“If it wasn’t for those that fight for our country, we wouldn’t have the country we do have today and the freedoms that we have,” said Knox resident Heidi Ottow.

Although it took years for Howes’ remains to be identified and brought home, Andy’s comrades never gave up hope. They say his photo stayed up in the Knox VFW all the years he was missing. Now, it finally gets to come down.

“We have never forgotten,” said Shepherd. “He’s a brother to us. You never forget your brothers.”

Andy’s memorial service is 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Knox Community Center. After that, his body will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
