Indiana state senators are advancing a measure that would restore a tax exemption designed to help low-income Hoosiers heat their homes.
The Senate tax committee voted unanimously to exempt recipients of the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program from paying the state's 7 percent sales tax on their aid.
The state ended the exemption last year during an ongoing budget
crunch. But the state's fiscal outlook has improved dramatically in
the past year.
Senate Democratic Leader Vi Simpson, of Bloomington, said the
exemption will ensure that more federal assistance goes to help Indiana residents rather than filling state coffers. The measure would extend the tax exemption through 2020. It must now win approval from the entire Senate.
