Republican candidate for governor Jim Wallace is fighting to make it on the ballot after election officials said Wednesday he came up short in his effort.
Wallace said that Marion County officials alerted him he was 111 signatures shy of the 500 needed in the state's 7th District. He says he has identified at least 200 signatures he feels were wrongly disqualified by election officials.
"We're obviously disappointed," said Wallace adding that he planned to hold a press conference Friday announcing his next step.
He said he is pondering taking the list of 200 voters he believes were wrongly disqualified to the Marion County Board of Voter Registration and asking for a reassessment. He is also looking at asking the state election division to intervene if the county does not accept the additional signatures.
To get on the ballot, statewide candidates must collect 500 signatures from registered voters in each of the state's nine congressional districts. If Wallace doesn't qualify, it would clear a path for U.S. Rep. Mike Pence to get the Republican nomination for governor.
Pence, Wallace, Democrat John Gregg, a former speaker of the Indiana House, and Libertarian Rupert Boneham, a star on the reality show "Survivor," all are running for governor. Gov. Mitch Daniels is term-limited from seeking re-election in November.
