A man described by the U.S. attorney's office as a leader in the Latin Kings street gang in northwest Indiana has agreed to plead guilty to murder in the aid of racketeering, participating in racketeering activity and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
Court documents filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hammond show Alexander "Pacman" Vargas of Highland has agreed to plead guilty in exchange for the U.S. attorney recommending he receive the minimum applicable sentence. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
An indictment in November accused 19 people of more than 75 criminal acts, including a Chicago police officer and a former police officer. Prosecutors said the conspiracy stretched from northwest Indiana to Texas and into Mexico.
