Indiana's law against operating a motorboat while intoxicated would be the same as that for drunken driving under a proposal advancing in the state Legislature.

The proposal expands the current drunken boating law's definition of intoxication while under the influence of a controlled substance.

It is a misdemeanor offense to drive a boat with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent or greater. Intoxicated boat drivers can face felony charges if they have a previous conviction or are involved in crashes in which a person is seriously hurt or killed.

The House voted 94-0 Tuesday in favor of the bill. The Senate earlier approved a similar bill and legislators must still agree on a single version.
