Northwest Indiana iron workers have gone on strike after their contract expired, idling construction projects on the Indiana Toll Road and other highways.
Spokeswoman Amber Scott of toll road operator ITR Concession Co. says work on bridges in Lake and Porter County has stopped. She says at least two travel lanes will be kept open in both directions while the strike continues.
Business Manager Mike Summers of Ironworkers Local 395 in Portage says about 500 workers went on strike after a contract with commercial and industrial contractors expired Monday. A strike authorization vote had been held two weeks ago for employees on project sites including the Indiana Toll Road and Interstate 80/94.
President Gary Kebert of the Northwest Indiana Contractors Association said he had no comment.
