Gov. Mitch Daniels says accelerated construction of the new U.S. 31 bypass being built east of Kokomo means it should be open two years earlier than originally planned.
The governor's office says Daniels spoke Tuesday to members of the U.S. 31 Coalition in Indianapolis, telling them he expected the highway's new Kokomo segment would be finished by the end of 2013.
The new bypass is part of $1.1 billion in planned upgrades along the 120-mile route of U.S. 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend.
Daniels said construction of the rerouted highway between Plymouth and South Bend should be finished in 2014. Plans are to upgrade the highway in the Carmel and Westfield area to interstate standards by the end of 2018.
