The arrival of a new 3,500-pound Indian rhinoceros has leaders of Evansville's zoo hoping that it can surpass the 200,000 visitor mark for the year.
The Mesker Park Zoo introduced the new 23-year-old female rhino named Mechi (MAY-chee) on Monday. She arrived Nov. 14 and replaces a male rhinoceros that died last year.
Animal curator Brad Fichter says Mechi is being kept inside because she's not used to the cold weather. She's also being confined for about 30 days to conduct health tests.
The zoo will be open free to visitors on Saturday. Nearly 197,000 people had visited the zoo this year through Monday.
