Prosecutors have charged a woman with leaving her 5-month-old daughter under the porch of a northwestern Indiana house and then telling police the girl had been kidnapped during a carjacking.
Lake County prosecutors on Monday filed felony neglect charges against 21-year-old Paris Houston of Hammond. Police Chief Brian Miller says a witness saw Houston place the baby underneath the porch during 39-degree weather on Friday.
Miller says Houston reported the carjacking, but later said she planned to return for her daughter after Christmas shopping at a Walgreens store.
Houston was being held at the Lake County Jail and it couldn't immediately be determined whether she had an attorney.
