A train that would ferry tourists between French Lick and Jasper in restored antique passenger cars could be rolling down the tracks by next spring.
Indiana Railway Museum president Alan Barnett expects that all of the details can be worked out by early spring for what's envisioned as year-round service through scenic southern Indiana.
Jasper Mayor Bill Schmitt says the train service would be popular with tourists drawn to the area's resorts and hotels. He says a lot of people are nostalgic about trains.
Once safety issues are resolved, the three Jasper-based railroad cars will be used for the excursions along rehabilitated tracks between the city and French Lick.
A replica of a 1909 depot has been built in Jasper to add a bit of charm for arriving and departing passengers.
