A fire has destroyed a historic building in the northern Indiana city of Delphi that housed a tavern and apartments.

No one was hurt in Wednesday's fire, which broke out in an apartment above the Office Tavern in downtown Delphi about 15 miles north of Lafayette.

But Chief Dennis Randle of the Delphi Tri-Township Fire Territory says the fire quickly engulfed the apartment and spread through the building, gutting it.

Crews later pulled down the brick structure's blackened walls to extinguish hot spots, bringing a swift end to a building that had stood since the 1880s.

Delphi Police Chief Justin Darling says at least three tenants were displaced by the fire. He says it's too early to know how the fire started.
