Indiana has its first signature wine, just in time for Thanksgiving. And it goes well with turkey.
The Indiana Wine Grape Council and state officials say it's Traminette, a fragrant and floral white wine from grapes that flourish in Indiana's climate. It's hybrid grape developed in part from the Gewurztraminer grape.
Jeannette Merritt of the wine grape council says Traminette is produced by 23 of Indiana's 43 wineries. Five of those wineries won medals for their Traminettes at this year's Indy International Wine Competition, one of the largest wine competitions in the world.
Merritt said Traminette is one of only a few state signature wines, joining the likes of Oregon's pinot noir and New York state's reisling.
A marketing campaign dubbed "Try on Traminette" will promote the wine.
