Indiana environmental leaders are worried that the state is targeting funds dedicated to protecting the environment and natural resources as it tries to offset a steep drop in state revenue.

A fourth of 23 dedicated funds being tapped to combat the revenue shortfall are devoted to improving or protecting the environment and natural resources such as by promoting recycling or removing invasive plants clogging some of the state's lakes.

Hoosier Environmental Council Executive Director Jesse Kharbanda questions whether funds that help the state's natural assets are being raided excessively.

But state Budget Director Chris Ruhl says the state's environmental agency has more such funds than most other agencies and that everything is under review.
