Police say suspected thieves fleeing from officers in southern Indiana were in a car that went out of control in a crash that killed one person.
State police say officers from Owensville and Fort Branch spotted men stealing anhydrous ammonia from the Warrick County Co-op about 12:30 a.m. Friday and tried to stop them as they left. The driver did not stop and caused a short pursuit that lasted until the crash near Haubstadt, about 15 miles north of Evansville.
Police say 42-year-old Joe Garrett Jr. of Princeton was ejected from the car and killed.
Another man fled from the crash and later surrendered to police with a broken hand. Investigators were uncertain who was driving the car.
Anhydrous ammonia is often stolen for use in the production of methamphetamine.
