Interstate 65 has been closed in both directions near Lowell for several hours after a crash involving three semitrailers.

Jasper County Emergency Management Director Karen Wilson says one of the trucks was hauling Pyridine, a highly flammable chemical. Lake County's hazardous materials team says the highway will remain closed until the chemical can be offloaded from the overturned semi.

State police say one person was injured in the crash that occurred in the northbound lanes about 3:31 p.m. Thursday.

Traffic is being diverted south at Indiana 2 and north at Ind. 14 in northwest Indiana. State police say traffic in the area is extremely congested.
